Some uneducated and at times politically incorrect thoughts:
1. Our INS and law enforcement can't keep up with legal much less illegal immigration now, how will they ever handle 8 to 10 million more?
2. If this plan is being presented as an effort to gain Hispanic votes, how does that compare to the loss of conservative votes?
3. The claim that parts of our economy would suffer without the low-paid workers - i.e., hotel, construction, restaurants, etc. - is questionable. Why not put the thugs/bums hanging out on street corners collecting welfare checks to work? (I warned you!)
4. And most important - how can President Bush guarantee terrorists will not use this additional weakness in our system to enter our country and kill more Americans?

Bush says, "We should have immigration laws that work and make us proud." Our current laws, he says, "force employers to turn to the illegal labor market." The laws of the market would say that employers would have to increase pay and benefits until the labor demand is met. Instead, they are moving outside the law and hiring illegals to warp the market.
At least one Limbaugh is thinking with a independetn mind. His brother has been a kneejerk flunkie.

Wonder how quickly employers would use illegal workers if employers were fined $500,000 with 5 years in jail????

Also, how do millions of illegals working here, paying taxes, paying into SS while sending most of their $$ back to their family in their native country help this economy? This is assuming they really are working and not collecting illegal welfare checks!!

"Wonder how quickly employers would use illegal workers if employers were fined $500,000 with 5 years in jail????"
To me that is just one of the biggest current problems. Get the businesses to stop hiring illegals and a big part of the problem goes away. But around here it is just the status quo of wink and a handshake. Once you fix this problem then you are left with those that are feeding at the Welfare Trough or doing odd jobs for individuals. Get Mexico on board to actually issue Worker Visas and the Illegal Alien problem should go down to a small manageable number.
Its to expensive and a waste of resources to go after the individual illegal. You got to go after the reasons that they choose to go through our bathroom window, instead of our front door.

4. And most important - how can President Bush guarantee terrorists will not use this additional weakness in our system to enter our country and kill more Americans? Not that I agree with your other points, but I pull this one out because you list it as "most important"...
I don't understand how Bush's immigration plan is going to make any difference to terrorists that want to come into this country. How will it aid them? Why would they want to appear before some official and fill out a form identifying who they are as well as possibly revealing their native land as soon as they speak? Why wouldn't they continue to enter this country as they already have... illegally, unemployed and inconspicuous? Wouldn't signing folks up help to decrease the pool of those whose identities are unknown and require manpower to seek out and identify?

Those who do not learn from the mistakes in history, are doomed to repeat them. The apple does not fall far from the tree. Not all platitudes are trite.
It is hard to imagine that a member of the Bush family could alienate the conservative base.

The fact that even Bush's supporters aren't sure why he's doing this or how he can justify it is all the proof we need that it is wrongheaded. It's a muddled plan, with dubious goals and inevitably negative consequences -- which doesn't bode well for the president's image as a decisive leader with moral clarity. This bugs me about Bush. A man that we all hold up as a foil to the moral and ethical wasteland of the past, comes along and offers an indefensible vision of the future. David's central question here is the motivation behind it. That's precisely why it bugs so many of us too. Even if it's purely political, (as Rush theorizes) it doesn't make sense by the numbers. It surely doesn't make economic sense, and it's cultural suicide-- not for racial reasons, for job market reasons and 'rule of law' reasons.
Lots of conservatives are sitting up and taking notice now, but when we look for alternatives in November, will we find a friend?

I don't understand how Bush's immigration plan is going to make any difference to terrorists that want to come into this country. It might make a difference --- there will be 8 million --- likely many more --- "blue cards" which can be sold on the streets, stolen, forced. That already goes on the the green cards --- if you want over the border, all you need to do is obtain someone else's documents.

But why should they enter using a different method than they already have and false documents are already available? I just don't get it. It makes no sense to me. They get their false documents overseas.
To: Elkiejg
So, to me, the problem is that few believe that a plan like this would be enforced. Rush's last caller yesterday convinced me that mass deportation is no answer -- the sob stories in the media would be relentless.
I believe there are two components to a real solution to this problem:
1) True border security that cuts off the uncontrolled influx of indocumentados.
2) True enforcement of employment law so that under-the-table payment, sub-minimum wage jobs, and fake social security scams are curtailed. This MUST be backed up with fines and imprisonment.
Then you could say that the playing field was level. One other thing -- if we have 12-15 million illegal aliens and only 5.7% unemployment, then I can see the presidents point. Frictional unemployment is 2-4%, so even 6%+ is not exactly high unemployment, democrat shrieking notwithstanding.
