As much as I love the rest of the state, I must admit, I am prejudiced, there is no place like the low country and Charleston is the capitol of it!!

Mama_Bear, once you get here you will never want to leave. The smell of the pluff mud, the fireflies, childrens laughter, the soft southern air, a smile from and for everyone and the graciousness of the people.

We, as well as our children still say yes ma'am/sir and no ma'am/sir, thank you and please. Manners are very important. In a sense you are stepping back in time to a more gracious relaxed ere, yet we are as modern and cosmopolitan as any other large seaport city, perphaps more so because of the international arts, etc.

Oh, the fireflies! I miss the fireflies that I grew up with back east. I don't know why we don't have them here in California. I haven't seen a firefly for over 20 years.

South Carolina sounds just lovely. I will get back there someday. :-)

Amen to that N. Theknow. We grow up on beach music and learn to shag before we walk! Those of us who grew up in the low country, had the beaches to play on all year round.

Island of Palms, Sullivan's Island, Folly Beach, Hunters, Island, Pawleys Island, Edisto Island, Dafuskie, Hilton Head, etc, etc, etc.

Mickey Spillane lives on, I believe Pawleys' Island close to Myrtle Beach.

I can't explain it, it's something in the blood, a scent, a sound, a movement in the air, something, something elusive...

It was the first submarine ever used in battle. They have finally finished with the restoration and they are now waiting to find a display site. She should be put at Patriots point along with the Yorktown, but that's not to be.
