I wish they'd drop a lander near these things, whatever the hell they are, near Mars's south pole:

That is the coolest picture. I expect John Carter, Warlord of Mars, to walk across the screen at any moment. ;-)

They look like squashed bushes. When I was growing up we had this round shrub, bush thing in our front yard. Everytime we would get a heavy rain it would kind of flatten out in the middle until it dried out again. When it was flattened out it looked exactly like those things in the pictures.

You are right, I wish they would bring back some pictures of those things close up, too.

Indeed, Mars is turning out to be a much more interesting place than once thought I suspect. Only ideas I have for the the features in this image are maybe some type of freeze upheaval similar to what forms the mounds in the Arctic. Some of those are around 30 feet in height. In the polar regions of Mars, one would think that CO2 or some other volatile instead of water would be the material.

We should drop at least a dozen of these rovers on the the next trip! Any dropped in the polar regions will need some type of nuclear or fuel cell energy source.

WOW! I have never seen that photo before. Are there any more like it?

I always wondered why they didn't land near the poles. It seems like that would be the place to find life on Mars, if it existed. I was so disapointed when the Mars Polar lander crashed.

Thanks for posting that picture.I've been looking for that one for a couple years, and not being able to remember what A.B. was talking about. Of course we know there's water/ice at both poles, but we wouldn't bother going there would we.
