I do believe that there was a civilization on Mars. I also think that NASA will have to look the other way to not see the artifacts. (My NASA friend thinks I'am crazy). Thanks for posting the pictures.

I have noticed that all the "RAW" images released on the MER homepage come in groups of three. Could this be RGB channels? Is there any way to combine the three "RAW" images to make a color?

NOTE: NASA has not released a map with named rocks on it. The names and rocks show above are a best guess based on scant descriptions from multiple new reports. See post #326 for more detail.

Yea, me and the wife agreed that if we were going digital, it was gonna be good, so we gifted it to ourselves pre-Christmas so we could take it with us to KY.

Now I figure it will pay for itself in saved film costs by about late April :) (Though with film I probably wouldn't take 200+ shots in a day!)

I've got a 400 Watt inverter for converting the VUE power points to AC. That way, I can expedition into the sticks with the camera, laptop and an external Zip the neighbor gave me and keep it all charged, downloading images on the fly to HD and\or Zip. The 400's were going for $30.00 at Kragen, and they had an 800 for $60.00 last fall. I'm considering creating some kind of business related to developing units of images and samples from various geological locales.

If you're going digital wait until you can get one of these, they ARE the schiznit. That stinkin' little memory chip (up to 2 Gig) plugs right in to a computer USB cable, and acts like an external HD. I got 1-256 Mb and it still blows my mind that that much stuff can be gotten on something that small! Additionally, the lens prices appear to have dropped like a rock after Christmas.

"Rectangle Hole Rock" left in the dust?

NASA's Spirit rover has moved into position to do science work on the pyramid shaped rock named "Adirondack". This means that the Spirit rover has turned its back on the rock that appears to have a rectangle hole in its side. New pictures have been released for Sol 15, and the strange rock is visible in the latest rear Navcam images.

Is this the last time we will see "Rectangle Hole Rock"?

NASA has not updated either the JPL homepage or the MER homepage since Friday, so I cannot say for certain. It is highly possible that the Pancam images released on Sol 15 (See Update Post #369) are going to be the best quality photos taken of this intriguing rock. However, I do expect that "Rectangle Hole Rock" will remain visible in both the Pancam and Navcam images for some time to come because its proximity of the current target rock, "Adirondack".

The second of two chosen science targets, "Sashimi", is believed to be the large pillow shaped rock near "Rectangle Hole Rock" (aka "Sushi"?). However, until NASA releases some images or maps that show rocks with their respective names, I cannot be certain that I have correctly identified "Sashimi", "Sushi" and "Edimame", the trio of rocks scientists are calling the "Wasabe Feature". (See Update Post #326)

If I have indeed correctly identified the "Wasabe Feature", then we should be getting some very high quality up close pictures of "Rectangle Hole Rock" late this week when Spirit moves in to do science work on "Sashimi". If not, then "Rectangle Hole Rock" could indeed be left in the dust, and become a smaller and smaller object as Spirit moves to investigate "Sleepy Hollow" and then treks off toward the mountians to the east.

I am currently working on creating color photos of "rectangle hole rock", but since I know virtually nothing about this process, I expect the results to be a few days out and NASA might just beat me to it...(I won't hold my breath)...

Petrified Trees - LOL. I had a dream about a week ago that they found a LIVING pine tree on Mars. I'm a geophysicist in real life, and in my dream I was hired to do a remote geophysical survey using the rover to see if their was water underground. I thought I wasn't going to get the work since there was a tree up there. However, the government didn't want to disclose that info. to the public, so I still went ahead with the survey. (And yes - I DO listen to Art Bell before going to bed!)

Hehe, wierd dream. Not sure why you had to find out if there was water when there was a tree growing there... =)

I used to listen to Art Bell too, but that was many years ago back when he talked about H.A.R.P all time and I only listened because he was on before all the old fashioned radio shows. I liked "The Phantom", "The Lone Ranger" and "Lum and Abner" as well, but they didn't play it very often. After a few years, they stopped playing them all together and so I stopped listening.

I have to go to bed, it's late and I only stayed up to catch the latest batch of RAW images. I'm gonna work some more on creating a color photo of the rock tommorow and hopefully somebody somewhere at NASA will decide to update their homepages so we can figure out what they did this weekend and what they have planned for the next few days.

I hear those old time shows only once in awhile - but they are GREAT. Art is on the weekends still, but it doesn't old my interest as much now, although the show is usually on in the background.

Thanks for the great photos. I think the rocks are probably just like finding images in the clouds, but you never know I guess. The closeup was amazing. The rectangular hole in the middle, with two small round holes on either side. I'm not very mechanical, but it reminds of some type of machinery I've seen. Like a turning crank/axle would go into the rectangular hole, with a couple of guide pins on either side that keep it locked in place.

And I'm not up on all my geology, but basalt will fracture in block forms, and can also have round vessicules too (old air bubbles).

I think the whole water thing they may be hoping for, but they are really stressing it to get the average Joe to be interested in the whole project. But to NASA and other scientists the basic knowledge of the minerals, etc. is cool enough.

(And in my dream, I still had to do the groundwater survey 'cuz it would be shown in public and it would be part of the "cover up" of what our government REALLY knows about Mars!! Pine trees and all! :-)"
