Rover has picked up a sound, seems to be coming from the general area of that rock:

Funny that you should post that picture. When I was looking through the latest images last night, this rock caught my eye. Back where I used to live in California it was very common to find sandstone with shells in them. This is just the kind of rock I would pick up if I were looking for fossils.

What do you make of the cross-cut section of electrical cable splat in the middle of that aggregate? ;^)
Please add me to your pinger; thanks.

Seems to be plenty of interesting specimens directly under the microscopic imager. I bet they had a hard time getting a soil only image.

My degree was in geology. You are quite correct about the rock that looks like it is full of fossil shells. On the right end of the rock you can see what appears to be the scalloped edge of a shell fish.
I also think this last picture looks like a fossilized bone.
Maybe it's my insomnia acting on me, but those certainly look unusual, to say the least.

Am happy to stay on your ping list. I tend to be a "more is better" sort of person MOST of the time.
Besides, I know how to work the delete or page down buttons.

Very interesting the hole is prefect 4 sided square,, and it's sad as a NASA supporter that JPL is not providing clear full (True) colors yet ! We are getting 1950's Black-n-white images in 2004 ! sad
Okay, here's what I found today with the very limited release of images from Jpl (21 only, mostly the same area)
*Music Please * :)
There are two (2) unknowns , objects, looks like metal ???
It's located at @ 2 O'Clock, 75% UP, Right...

2-3 feets from 2 objects.

So let me get this straight.
NASA went right over to this rock and started taking pics.
OK how many NASA lurkers are on this thread?
To: Miss Marple
Miss M,
As always I am amazed at the intelligence and background of my fellow Freepers, what a source of information and
inspiration you are. I just wish there were some way we could hear the conversations of the NASA geologists, we might not understand half of it but I'm sure we would learn a lot. Might need you to interpret though. Tet68

It's a religious artifact which was used eons ago as part of a sacrificial alter. Little green men would touch antennas and chant, "All your Uranus belong to us."
