I found this piece more direct in its assessment of how bad this policy would be.
Those who have been to the border trying to stem the tide have seen Bush turn his head over and over again when Americans have begged him to plug the 100's of miles of open gaps. He refused. Right this minute there are hundred trying to sneak over here along with men in black P.J.'s, the Mexican army, and drug runners with armed escorts. The American people do not matter to Bush when it comes to this issue. He is pandering and will lose my vote in 2004.

THEY SAY any illegal immigrant found in the US who has not applied for the guest worker visa would be deported on the spot, chop chop.
THEY are the same folks who told us we need a guest worker program 'cause deporting border jumpers just isn't a realistic option.

Amen.
And mine, too.
He and his administration are either with US or they are of the enemy -- his choice.

Word is out that the border patrol is outraged at this proposal. It's almost like they're busting their tails for nothing. Sounds similar to the Vietnam War to me where the government is fighting a war it has no intention of winning and is even undercutting its own troops.

the provisions in existing guestworker programs that are intended to ensure that American workers get first crack at jobs" have been a complete failure. Even if the political will existed to prevent employers from bypassing American workers in favor of foreign guestworkers which there doesnt the Labor Department does not have the resources to monitor the hiring process.Well, according to the info posted Tuesday on the White House site, the hiring process "to ensure that American workers get first crack at jobs" will be bypassed for those millions of jobs now held by illegal workers (translation: a complete pass for employers who currently employ illegals):
From "Background Briefing by Conference Call on Immigration Policy" :
Q So an employer won't have to fear that they'll also have to step forward and show that their worker is undocumented. Will they have to register that undocumented worker? Is that the idea?
SENIOR ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL: The employer will sponsor the undocumented worker, yes. But if you're asking the question as to whether the person needs to say, okay, well, here's Mary, and she's in this spot, do we need to hold on Mary and look for some American to fill that position, the answer is, no. We assume that by virtue of Mary's employment, that marketplace test, if you will, has already been met.
A "marketplace test" based on breaking the existing law.

Yes I agree this in way make our nation safer.
And where will the resouces come from to "check" thess 8 million applicants?
They will not apply but are now aware that its OK to come in illagaly because a politicin pandering for votes will aooffer sanctuary/amnesty/OKIE DOKIE status at some point.
And everyone is only discusing this in terms of Latinos.
Is this program available to Arabs as well?
