I am not quite sure what the press should say. This message was in Bibles issued to GIs during WW2 -- I think that the Bibles were essentially subsidized by NGOs in cooperation with the military chaplains, and I think this message appeared in Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish versions distributed to GIs.

Unlike schoolchildren, soldiers are adults, presumably already raised in a religion and capable of making a choice about their religious preferences. Unlike civilians, the govt has removed them from their home congregations and put them among people of different beliefs and probably in places where there is no congregation in their preferred religious affiliation. So the govt, having taken them from their own congregations, has an obligation to try to fill the gap.
