She's wrong about 2 things:
1) All adults who loved LOTR believe in hobgoblins.
2) The movie "The English Patient" was good.
Maybe she's wrong about "Cold Mountain". Haven't seen it yet so can't tell.

Good observations. My husband and I enjoyed LOTR, and neither of us believe in "hobgoblins". As to the English Patient, well, I thought it was dreadful. I have yet to see "Cold Mountain", and it's not very high on my list of "must see's".

I half like the LOTR's triology but they are toooo Loooong! Bring back the intermission like they used to have!
Totally agree on "The English Patient"- that was insufferable!

She's wrong about the book also. It was not DOA. It was well-received and celebrated. She's also wrong about the characters being pacifists. The protagonist was disillusioned and tired of fighting.
Having said all that, I did not particularly enjoy the book, though the prose was excellent. The previews for the movie look pretty sappy, so I think I'll go see Master and Commander for the third time.

2) The movie "The English Patient" was good. I wholeheartedly disagree, although I have never cared for Ralph Fiennes as an actor. I did not find it as "slow" as other people and enjoyed film.

I can say that I've never seen "The English Patient" because I rented it when it came out on video and turned it off halfway through. It was a TERRIBLE movie!
This alone may keep me from 'Cold Mountain'.

2) The movie "The English Patient" was good. It was a good movie, but it was basically a new Casablaca where most everyone does the wrong this whereas Bogart does the right thing. Different times my friend...

LOTR didn't make me believe in hobgoblins; it was seeing Kucinich that did it.
