Hillary Clinton apologises for Gandhi joke

NEW YORK (AFP) - New York Senator Hillary Clinton (news - web sites) has felt obliged to apologise for making a joke about Indian independence hero Mahatma Gandhi having worked as a gas station manager in Saint Louis, Missouri.

"I have admired the work and life of Mahatma Gandhi and have spoken publicly about that many times," the former US first lady said in a statement.

"I truly regret if a lame attempt at humour suggested otherwise," the statement said.

The apology followed Clinton's remarks at a weekend fund-raiser, where she joked that Gandhi once "ran a gas station down in Saint Louis" -- a stereotypical job for South Asians in the United States.

At the time, Clinton had qualified her joke by adding that Gandhi was a "great leader" of the 20th century.

"Yes, but you have to remember.....Indians are not a protected species."

This is not necessarily true. If you are truly PC, you will be aware of a river in India. Those born west of the river are middle-eastern and not protected. Those born east of the river are Asian, a protected minority in some circles. Since we don't know which side of the river Ghandi is from, we can't be sure of the answer.

PS, I'm not kidding about the river. It was officially discussed in a a sensitivity training session in a large company which will remain unnamed. Those born east of the river were given preferred hiring status.

If this were a Republican, the media/Dem machine would be in full gear, trying to pressure her to resign.

There can be truth in The Simpsons humor, all right.

Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, a small state in western India. He was named Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The word Gandhi means grocer, and generations earlier that had been the family occupation. But Gandhi's grandfather, father, and uncle had served as prime ministers to the princes of Porbandar and other tiny Indian states, and though lower caste, the Gandhis were middle-class, cultured, and deeply religious Hindu

I remember that. Wasn't that a book written by someone who knew her, who said in private she was always uttering ethnic slurs?

The name "Patel" means landlord in India, I've been told. So many people with the last name of Patel have bought or built motels in the U.S. that in the industry, motels are referred to now as Potels.
