We are all the descendants of immigrants who respect economic growth and the improvement in the quality of life that results. And we respect the law, and all the immigrants who have come here LEGALLY, as my family did. We can allow plenty enough people to immigrate into this country LEGALLY to fuel economic growth. We do not have to tolerate millions of immigrants trampling our laws.

Hey CJ, posts 8, 25, 567, 577, 643, 650, 781, 918, 971 and 1153 should disabuse you, once and for all, that the discourse here is about Illegal Aliens of any race, language or ethicity and not just Mexicans. ;^)

The problem with those opposed is that they have not yet read or hear what the President has proposed. They hear only what they want to hear and strike all the rest. They want the borders closed which is stupid and can't be done.
To: BushisTheMan
Despite the hysteria and historinics on this thread, so far this is only a proposal. No one's seen the actual proposed legislation, no one knows how this is going to come out of committee, and no one knows what it's going to look like when it goes through the House and Senate--including what amendments are proposed and which ones pass--and no one knows what's going to come out of the conference committee.
Until then, it's just a lot of shrieking.

All they will have to do is show their "blue card" and they will get a driver's license. The blue card makes them legal and therefore eligible for a driver's license. Or, as legal workers, they will be allowed to drive using their Mexican driver's license.
So, the driver's license issue is irrelevant.

We do not have to tolerate millions of immigrants trampling our lawsWe don't have to allow tens of millions of immigrants from one single country. I have said it before and I am going to repeat it.
This is cultural suicide!!!
When you bring in one fifth of your country's population from one place and they breed twice the rate you do--you will turn into the face of that country. Why is that difficult to understand? We will be Mexico.

No it's because I am reasonable in trying to find a solution whereas you are not. What's wrong with Iron Eagle's solution in #1079? The Bush 'solution' appears to be capitulation and appeasement.

I know what's happened to you. We all have our breaking points. You found yours. Happens to everyone sooner or later. Of course, you have people like me who seem to find their breaking point six different times a day but that's another therapy session altogether.
Go get 'em, RB. And, welcome to the I'm Gonna Lose It And I Don't Even Care Club. It's taken me waaaaaay too long to get you to join. Hahahaha

So when someone uninformed voices a flawed argument such as illegal workers pay taxes and deserve government benefits... It is useless to even discuss this with you. You don't even bother to read my posts thoroughly enough to represent my position correctly.
Just to clarify things: I never argued that illegals pay taxes (most don't) and thus deserve government benefits (they don't). What I said is that if they are here working legally, they WILL be paying taxes, which will help defray the cost of any services they use.
If you are seeing so much welfare fraud in your state, something definitely needs to be done, because by law, illegals are not supposed to receive welfare at all. This proposal would not entitle them to receive welfare either. In order to be here under this program, they must have a job. IF they bring their family in, they must show that they can support them. If they violate these requirements, their work visa can be revoked.
A lot of the arguments about the current situation are valid, but this program may alleviate some of that. It certainly will not add to the problem. Why take the chance of coming in illegally, being arrested and deported, when you can come in legally to work at better wages than you could make under the table?
I can see that this is a very emotional issue for you, but you really need to calm down, read more carefully,a nd consider the big picture. You're going to work yourself into a coronary.
To: FredTownWard
"That would be the DEMOCRAT agenda." Oh please, that is so outrageous. Yes I propose rounding them up and deporting them by the train load. I propose making things so tough at the border that they feel it better to change Mexico's policies rather than be pandered to in the USofA.
There is nothing, not one thing in Bush's amnesty that prevents or dissuades the millions behind the millions we already have here from coming. His vauge reference to, they have to leave in three years, oh yeah? Whose going to make them? The INS can't lay it's hands on the 300,000+ that have deportation orders against them now.
The majority of these mexicans do not want to assimilate unless they find a benefit in dual citizenship. They intend the future of the USofA nothing but ill will considering the partying in the streets of Mexico they engaged in on 9-11.
What Bush and you are calling for is making euro- Americans a minority in five years as they sink beneath the waves of millions and millions more "migrants". I consider that treason of the highest order.
To: Miss Marple
That is exactly why you need a guest worker program with monitoring of the employers. Then they will have taxes deducted and the employers will have to pay for their portion of the payroll tax. If they then want to send the rest of their paychecks to Mexico, that's their business.Since they will be paying taxes they will want to vote. Which way do you think they will vote?
Since they will be paying taxes they will have to file at the end of the year. We already know that their wages will be very low, so they most likely will qualify for the earned income tax credit. That means that they will be getting back more than they put in. I guarantee that there will be Latino advocacy groups galore that will do their taxes for them and ensure that they are aware of the EITC.
To: MissAmericanPie
Could you really stomach gunning down innocent, men, women, and children at the border?"
Innocent people don't break into other people's homes. That makes them anything but innocent. They should be prevented from turning the nation forever into a socialist democracy, by any means necessary.
OK, MissAmericanPie, now that we've established your willingness to use "any means necessary", how many illegal aliens would you be willing to shoot on a weekly basis in hopes of discouraging the rest? More to the point how many Americans do you think would support a Republican President who implemented such a policy? Somehow I doubt it would be a majority. So do you think you will like President Dean's immigration policy any better?
To: MissAmericanPie
Yes I propose rounding them up and deporting them by the train load I really like you.

We don't need cheap labor with all its attendant social and political costs. We can do better. Much better. How much of this country was built on cheap labor? And how many ethnic groups have been despised for displacing the lowest rung on the economic ladder? You are right, we can do better, we have done better, making the unskilled labor pool hard to fill from within.
