The Time cover that didnt appear
It isnt often that someone turns down an offer to be Time magazines Person of the Year, especially when that someone is as important as Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
But thats what Rumsfeld did when he learned that Time was planning to honor him in its year-end issue last month.
Rumsfeld told guests at a holiday party that in this year of conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. military deserved the honor more than he did, which is why Army Sgts. Marquette Whiteside and Ronald Buxton and Spc. Billie Grimes turned up on Times Dec. 29 cover.
Time Managing Editor James Kelly appears to confirm Rumselds self-effacing act, if only obliquely, in an editors note recounting that when he and several other editors met with Rumsfeld at the Pentagon in November to talk about the war, [the Defense Secretary] made the pitch, unsolicited by us, that the Person of the Year should be the American soldier. (Or as he put it, the American volunteer.)
Kelly also noted that Washington bureau chief Michael Duffy and senior correspondent Mark Thompson were working on a profile of Rumsfeld in preparation for the issue, but set it aside to help two fellow Time journalists who were injured in Iraq. (The profile appeared in the Person of the Year issue.)

For republicans a government job is a step down in pay grade, for most democrats its a step up.And for many democrats, it's a step out of the unemployment line.

I just came across this quote yesterday:
You have reached the pinnacle of success as soon as you become uninterested in money, compliments, or publicity.

This is wonderful. Rummy gets to give the nod to the troops he loves, and personally sticks it to Time Magazine at the same time.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Rummy and Gen. Myers on the press coverage of the major operations in Iraq: Pentagon Townhall Meeting, Apr. 17.
Rummy does "do tact", though the mainstream press got all over him the following weekend for this Townhall answer: he trusts the American people to find (and reward) trustworthy news sources. (^:

Oops!. I've been vituperating...The last time I vituperated, I think I busted something.
I'll repeat what everyone else is saying. Rummy is a class act and a patriot.

This is why Rummy is my favorite of all in the Bush cabinet. Ditto for me. Rummy was a NAVAL AVIATOR. This is no f***ing lawyer.

When I was growing up we used Time magazine in the classroom. When my father found out, he made a few phone calls and voila....no more Time. It wasn't even allowed in our house!

Actually, I've heard from some pretty reliable sources that the President wants him back and he wants to return!! Please let this be true.

Thanks Veronica.
Rummy is the man. A real man who wants those under him to get the credit for what was done in Afghanistan and Iraq.

On another thread, I said Rumsfeld was my favorite Cabinet member.
This is one reason. Another has been his performance as SECDEF. A third reason was what he did when that plane hit the Pentagon. He was leading the rescue efforts from the front - where a LEADER should be.

BTTT!
Note even in covering their own 'non' story, they still make some jabs at Rummy...by calling his self-effacement an 'act'. If they had made him their cover person of the year, you can bet that the article would have been generally negative, with a lot of aspersions from partisans against the national defense.
