Immigration IS the foundation of America! The day we deny that is the day America FALLS

"The New Colossus"

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land, Here at our sea-washed, sunset-gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose fame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome, her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin-cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she, With silent lips. "GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE, THE WRETCHED REFUSE OF YOUR TEEMING SHORE; SEND THESE, THE HOMELESS, TEMPEST-TOST TO ME, I LIFT MY LAMP BESIDE THE GOLDEN DOOR!" November 2, 1883

Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)

Maybe technology is one solution (to eliminate the need for cheap labor)? Seems like those on welfare might be used to do this type of work (and learn a trade to boot).

It should *never* be okay to ignore or break the law.

No sir, I don't skirt the issue. You were the first to bring it up. By finding a solution that allows you to identify them first and integrate them into the system, you can now hold them more accountable. They can pay taxes....
Any effort to withdraw from the system by them gives reason to send them back to where they came from....if you don't identify them how are you going to track them. Are you going to start running a police state where everyone will have to have their papers comrade. As far as the working the fields comment, when is the last time you went out into the field and picked anything for a living? I have and it ain't pretty and you can't pay the bills doing it either. Tell me why you wouldn't want to pick okra in the middle of the hot summer in 90% humidity with out a long sleave shirt?

YEah sure, promote the MExican mafias making money off of the trade, including illegals. Like they are your poor and hungry ready to help out and respect.

Amnesty Americans too. No selective racist Amnesty.

No, immigration is not the foundation of America, it is importing good values from abroad, and that means God, not trash.

"Diversity is our strength" is the saddest myth that has come down the pike in a long time.

Perhaps so, but then again I don't see to many people trying to Diversify China either. They lock the borders to keep them in there. The immigration policy sucks I agree, but who has the balls to hammer out the issue amoung the American public...well maybe Bush does......it will be harder than getting the public behind the Iraqi War for sure.

If I remember my history correctly, the Cotton Gin reduced the demand for slave labor.

It could be that once labor costs increase, "invention" will arise from "necessity."

Either way, jobs for illegals will disappear (they are too expensive and/or become obsolete due to technology).

This might be a trojan horse for illegals.

Exactly, I brought it up, and you ignored it as if it wasn't important.

You ramble on about all this identification stuff and can't hardly get a coherent thought out. What the hell do you want? We have a system for legal immigrants. Why are you so hung up on all the lawbreakers?

BTW dude, I've tossed seed and feed, thinned apples, thrown hay, delivered pizza, worked at a general store and did groundskeeping at a golf course. Also, until you've spent 12+ hours in a level B chemical protective suit with a full face respirator when it's 90+ degrees out I'd have to say you don't know S**T about working in heat and humidity, and I DO.

If I needed the work to feed me or my family I'd do any of the stuff I listed again, and even making 60K a year as a salaried geologist I still do my own hand augering, drum rolling, dirt shoveling, well bailing, etc... so don't give me, and probably most other Freepers, that tired crap about Americans not liking to do hard work.

Also, I don't have any qualms about shucking $2.00 to buy a head of lettuce if, in punting ILLEGAL aliens, it means labor prices to pick it go up some.

Lady Liberty's plaque is nice as far as Hallmark Moments go, but it doesn't have diddly to do with policy, law, the constitution, or the philosophy of the founders...

America was founded in 1776, not 1886.
Our historical policy is to alternate heavy immigration with restricted immigration.
Go learn history and come back.

Legal or illegal, people will come to America because they have a dream of being free. It is up to us to find a way to make them a legal part of the system.

No, the onus is on them.

I hope not...we need more payees not more collectors. I say make the illegals...legal and make them pay taxes and SS and if we like the effort they have made over the next 10 years then we can decide if their desire to be a citizen of the greatest country ever warrents citizenship. Anything other than that we have to increase our taxes or repeal the bush tax cut in order to arrest, incarcerate, and deport the illegals just so they can hang out at the border and wait to come back across. Then we can raise taxes again....etc....etc...vicious cycle. Make them legal, contributing factors who now are only one small step closer to their dream....Now don't read into what I said...I did not say give them amnesty or SS!

Yeap...that statue....it's ours lets take it back along with any other American cultural heritage that has been designated as a protected icon through the U.N. When Emma wrote that poem there was no U.N. When the Statue was built there was no U.N., so remind me again why the U.N is here....regardless of who's name is next to it on paper. We all know in America who built it, preserved it, held it as an icon of our existance. If terrorist destroy it (God forbid) you think the U.N. would rebuild it with their own money.....not...the only money they got is the money America gives them. U.N. = redistribution of wealth, sovereignty, and liberty to third world contries who couldn't give a rats ARse about what W, S, L, really means or the price Americans have paid to obtain and sustain it over the last 200+ years.

Enough said!

No, the onus is on them...

Okay, your right! we must demand that they take full responsibility for their actions and ask them to leave immediately on their own accord. I for one expect this problem to be solved with NO additional spending of American tax dollars. If they won't leave well I guess that all of the immigration service employees who have not been doing their job will have no problem working for free to correct this problem that they did not keep from happening.

Perhaps the onus is really on us to come up with a immigration policy and laws that goven the policy that works. The end result would be a system that recognized the current immigration issue (legal and illegal) that now exist and would provide a solution that would possibly have them paying for the solution and the implementation of that solution. Or perhaps that is just too much to ask for.

Thanks for the reply!

Wow...I'm impressed that you were able to read so much into my post about my intimate knowledge of or the lack there of on when our country was founded. 1886 was the date that Emma wrote the poem (I believe it was the month of Novermber too), so I'm not so sure how you figured out that I really meant that America was founded then (or perhaps you should go back and read the FULL post before you speak), but perhaps that is a tribute to your superior intelligence. So, since you know so much about history, and I guess you are also a believer in history repeating itself, you tell me whether we are in a period of heavy immigration or restricted immigration, since you suggest that we have been alternating between the two during our last 200 hundred plus years of existance. Oh, wait....does immigration before the signing of the Declaration of Idependance and the signing of the Constitution count? What historical policy are you quoting here? I await your enlightened response!

Hmmm...the cotton gin only solve the issue of picking cotton and thank god it did. Ever heard of the term "Your in high cotton"? The key phrase you say is "It could be" that is a futuristic hope of something that is not necessarily reality. So, since you gave me a "Could be" I will give you one back. Could be that if we don't solve this immigration issue there will be as many none tax paying workers in the US as Americans in the future taking jobs Americans are killing to get a chance at while their un-employment and SS benefits are being taxed to pay for the existence of the illegal immigrants (none tax paying workers) who continue to refuse to be recognized as legal workers. Now that's a real trojan horse!

Thanks for the reply!

Well first of all....no where in my original post did I advocate the amnesty of 8 million illegal aliens or suggest that any of them should get SS. If you go back an read the original post you will find that I tried to link the problem (immigration) with the fact that SS needs new money contributed into its coffers. If we gave the illegal immigrants a reason to identify themselves, volunteer to pay into the tax system (ie. SS), could we not find it in our heart after 10 years or so to review them as applicants for Citizenship? I'm interested in solutions that may pay for themselves in the long run, not blow the Bush tax cut and the deficit and spending to a level that no one in this world can afford. You lead me to believe that you want to identify, arrest, incarcerate, and deport all illegal immigrants, only to find that the same immigrant is back in the country within the next five years. It's not what you make, but how you spend it! TAXES

Now how you find anything that I said racist is beyond my understanding. Perhaps that's one you would like to elaborate on.

Perhaps this explains why so many here have labeled and accussed me of being a democratic troll.......well perhaps there is more to a name than what meets the eye. What's the difference between a democratic conservative and a republican conservative? Sould be nothing...they're both conservative. But ahhhh, that is where you must engage your intellegence not your emotions and discern more closely the points that are offered.

Thanks for the reply Judge!
