"The New Colossus"

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land, Here at our sea-washed, sunset-gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose fame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome, her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin-cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she, With silent lips. "GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE, THE WRETCHED REFUSE OF YOUR TEEMING SHORE; SEND THESE, THE HOMELESS, TEMPEST-TOST TO ME, I LIFT MY LAMP BESIDE THE GOLDEN DOOR!" November 2, 1883

Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)

You need to go back and study logic....for you have none after making that post. I would not want to have my name next to such statements.....immigration CAN be legal or illegal, but none of the other things you listed are ever legal here in the United States or the world. For you to try and even suggest that illegal immigration is criminal at the level of these other acts against humanity is preposterous. For you to try and attach them to things I've said is slanderous. Please, spare me your stupidity in the future.

I don't either, so we got something in common to build from. If Mexico wants to refuse legal entry into their country because of something Mr. Buchanan did at the border then I whole heartedly agree with them. Problem is that there ain't nobody fighting to get into Mexico. They need the tourist and the money. They are fighting to get in to America and the elected officials refuse to do anything to inforce the policy and laws that are currently on the books. So, we must find a different way to solve this problem, because no matter how hard we make it for them...they are still going to continue to come.

Thanks for the Relies!

"For you to try and even suggest that illegal immigration is criminal at the level of these other acts against humanity is preposterous."

Your statements speaks volumes about your ignorance. FYI, the definition you may want to learn a little about:

(From http://www.m-w.com/)

"Main Entry: 1il·le·gal
Pronunciation: (")i(l)-'lE-g&l
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle French or Medieval Latin; Middle French illegal, from Medieval Latin illegalis, from Latin in- + legalis legal
Date: 1538
: not according to or authorized by law : UNLAWFUL, ILLICIT; also : not sanctioned by official rules"

It is stealing. It is no different than breaking into my house and stealing my DVD player or PC. If you come into my nationa and steal it's resources then you are not only entering the United States illegally you are stealing my tax dollars which could be used on other more legitimate needs. You are defending this like it is a traffic ticket. You need to go back to DU.

The fact of the matter is you don't have heated discussions about legal immigration, only illegal.Right now there are immigrants waiting to come to this country, and they are going about it the legal way.The illegal immigration is doing a major disservice to the people who come here legally. Why should the United States give preference to the people who break the laws to get here. What you come across as saying is that we are anti immigrant, when that is not the way it is at all,no we are not anti immigration,we as Americans have laws to abide by,and if people want to come to this country they have to abide by those laws too.

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Yes, immigrants are still welcomed here, and they must go through the same process as those who came before them.

Good point.

However, that may not be as much of an option these days due to urbanization. Many don't own enough land to be able to grow enough food to sustain themselves. And there are zoning laws against farm animals, etc. Heck, most new houses these days don't even have a fireplace (or one that can burn wood). Of course, that would all change if things got desperate.

Don't want to be glass is half empty but I have thought about this. Many of us are at the mercy of grocery stores, utilities companies, the government, etc. Whereas, in the past, many could do exactly what you suggest and survive. Maybe not forever, but for an extended period of time.

Who's going to volunteer to work the fields and the farms of America?

In a free market, you will have all the field workers you'll ever need, IF you offer the compensation that the market demands.

What the commies here at FR want is cheap, subsidized labor. They talk free market all day when it comes to the large number of engineers and programmers all competing and pushing down wages, but when it comes to the lack of competeting field workers, they wan't the government to provide welfare via looking the other way while they import illegal serfs, and now with this amnesty proposal.

If you don't have enough LEGAL people beating down the door to work for you, then you have to PAY more for that labor resource.

Supply and demand cuts both ways.

"Nobody is invading my state, town, or my home."

Do you know what the situation is in California? Arizona? New Mexico? Are you related to 'Baghdad Bob' by chance??

"America is not a police state...at least not yet. What appears evident to me is people like you who really hate all immigrants, but know that directing your hate and anger at the legal ones is not acceptable, so you focus all of that negative energy on the ones who are not legal."

I apologize. Did I call you "dishonest and delusional"??

Let me re-phrase that. You are either an ET or insane. In any case, say "hi" to Chewbacca for me.

How true...we Americans always seem to want it both ways. As a white collar engineer, I am hoping that the gov. somehow protects my job and status from outsourcing in the world, but somehow I can find a spot to argue for the rights of an immigrant worker who longs to have the chance to work and live in America. Perhaps I should go and work in the fields now and forget that white collar job, house, car, boat, two cats in the yard....life use to be so hard...now every thing is easy because of you.

No....I am not trying to label you as anti-immigration. I believe that you can make as many laws as you like, but the ability to enforce those laws can dictate whether or not the law is a good law or just another law that is not enforced. We have tons of those laws dealing with gun control but how many of those laws are good laws that help stop gun violence. Immigration laws are simular. Make all the laws you want. They are coming...legal or illegal, and we Americans will one day have to figure out what to do with them. You know I often wonder what Native Americans laws if any we broke by immigrating here to their land hundreds of years ago? Could this only be fate or destiny that our borders are being overrun by illegal immigration when our whole nation was started in a race of immigration absence of laws any white european would recognize as just?

These immigrants and illegal aliens, are not becoming Americans. They continue to hold their previous citizenship with foreign countries. They vote in elections of foreign countries and the United states, They get welfare, hud housing, food stamps, free election, free medical care, discounted college education, and prioritized enrollment in post secondary education, because they are a minority.

Perhaps it is just the opposite and speaks volumes of my intellegence. For a coin always has two sides just like a story. Unfortunately, in your world everything always comes up heads or perhaps that is fortunate for you since that would mean something is rigged or corrupt. Ah, back to the illegal thing...so what you have focused on is the adjective and not the noun. Below is really what you are looking for.

Main Entry: im·mi·grant
Pronunciation: 'i-mi-gr&nt
Function: noun
: one that immigrates : as a : a person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence b : a plant or animal that becomes established in an area where it was previously unknown

Or the verb:

Main Entry: im·mi·grate
Pronunciation: 'i-m&-"grAt
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): -grat·ed; -grat·ing
Etymology: Latin immigratus, past participle of immigrare to remove, go in, from in- + migrare to migrate
intransitive senses : to enter and usually become established; especially : to come into a country of which one is not a native for permanent residence
transitive senses : to bring in or send as immigrants
- im·mi·gra·tion /"i-m&-'grA-sh&n/ noun
- im·mi·gra·tion·al /-shn&l, -sh&-n&l/ adjective

Either way there is nothing about illegal or legal in the definition of the concept. They are coming and have been coming since before America was a nation. Think maybe there was some violation of Native American immigration laws when the europeans showed up on the continent hundreds of years ago? Would that be a law that such a law abiding citizen like yourself would adhere too? I bet not! You probably break the spead limit everyday...but that is okay because you don't usually get caught right? Or, you just pay the ticket and/or fine as the right of a citizen of the nation. By your conclussion below, all of Americans today are stealing from the Native Americans who owned and inhabited the North American continent before the Europeans and other immigrants. Are you really willing to give back to them what you have now so boldy claimed to have taken.

I bet not!

No the article was posted a long time ago and is probably in the digital scrap heap of yesterday. It was an article that was posted end of last year when Mr. Fox came across the border to pow wow with great white American chief and Bush decided to float a trial balloon on documenting illegal workers and perhaps maybe finding a way to plug them into being a part of the solution instead a part of the problem, but most people thought that ment amnesty and well you know what that does to the crowd. Funny though the Democrats are floating a simular balloon and nobody is reacting at all to it and they are talking amnesty. So, vanity no, but boy this topic is surely loaded...watch were you step.

Good luck

You seem to imply that we're slamming the door shut on legal immigration. The United States lets in over one million legal immigrants each year. How many more legal immigrants do you advocate that we let in each year?

I have clients who employ illegal aliens. They pay them the same as they pay anyone else. They suspect they are illegal, but they show up with documents that are probably forged, and they have to treat them like everyone else. The employers are between a rock and a hard place. If they start treating Hispanic applicants differently, and demand more proof, or check their ID's more carefully, the EEOC would be on them so fast it would make their heads spin.

All that employers would have to do is to check ALL job applicants' ID's and documentation more carefully so there would be no claims of discrimination towards Mexican job applicants. But employers don't want to do that because then they would know that illegal aliens are applying for the jobs, and employers are quite aware that it's illegal to knowingly hire an illegal alien. Since it's these very illegal aliens that employers want to hire in the first place, by not checking all job applicants' ID's and documentation more carefully, employers can plead ignorance if it can be proven that they have illegal aliens working for them. Employers know exactly how to get around the law against knowingly hiring illegal aliens.

Legal immigrants, that's who. By legal, I mean people who came to the United States legally. If we need more legal immigrants, Congress can increase the number of legal immigrants that we let in each year. There are millions of people around the world who would love to come to the US legally to live and work.
