Bush seeks to ease immigration laws

WASHINGTON — President Bush is proposing to let foreign workers who have U.S. jobs waiting for them enter America.

Virtually silent on the immigration issue for two years, Bush was working today on remarks he will make about immigration on Wednesday afternoon at the White House to about 150 people active in immigration issues.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan would not say whether the president would announce a detailed proposal, or general outlines of a proposal to match willing foreign workers, mostly from Mexico, with receptive U.S. employers. There are an estimated 10 million undocumented workers in the United States, as many as half of them from Mexico

‘‘It’s the issue of what he’s talked about before — about matching willing workers with willing employers where there are jobs that Americans are not interested in filling,’’ McClellan said.

‘‘That’s an economic need that exists. It’s important that we have a fair immigration policy and an immigration policy that addresses those economic needs,’’ McClellan added.

The announcement comes just before Bush’s scheduled meeting with Mexico’s President Vicente Fox next week at the Summit of the Americas in Monterrey, Mexico. Mexican officials have complained bitterly at times that while the Bush administration has sought their help with border security and combatting drug trafficking, they have not acted on their desire for favorable changes in U.S. immigration policy.

Mexican officials have argued that the administration used post-Sept. 11 security concerns as an excuse to better protect, rather than allow freer movement over the U.S.-Mexican border. Tense relations were further aggravated by Mexico’s decision not to support the U.S.-led war in Iraq, and when Bush refused to stop the execution of a Mexican national in Texas.

I campaigned for Bush and convinced many people to vote for him. But now I have lost count of how many times Bush has dared me not to vote for him, and essentially told his conservative base to suck eggs.

He seems to think I owe him my vote. If he makes the same mistake his dad did and gets thrown out on his can, maybe he really is as stupid or elite as the libs have been saying all along.

And I take no pleasure in saying that.

The problem is that once you match jobs with illegal immigrants, you might as well disband the border patrol and begin the process of writing the NAU (North American Union) Constitution (It's a Canuck fantasy, not mine). Because once you de-nationalize a nation, destroy it's borders, language and culture, it ceases to exist.

If a person is matched with a job and comes to work they are no longer illegal. I would separate this from an entirely different problem that I absolutely don't condone or support. And that is the parallel culture that is growing. If a person cannot read or write English then tough luck. That's what they told my ancestors and that's why we became a so called melting pot. I don't care if neighborhoods want to run their business in their native language, but the institutions of this country should not.

Look, how they vote is up to them. I'm backing Bush on this, and I think I will listen to see what he wants done on this issue, and I admit my position on immigration is in line with the Wall Street Journal's position.

I have no hesitation in saying that the comments of some members of the Tancredo fan club have pushed me in that direction on this issue. Furthermore, I think that the immigration restriction crowd has utterly failed to make itself unwelcome to bigots like Sam Francis and VDARE, and that has repelled me even further from that position.

If bigotry is welcome in that movement, then I hope the restrictionists are shown the door.

Why? Because some people who weekly find a reason why they can't vote for Bush have suddenly found yet another reason why they can't vote for him?

Many of those folks are warmed over, renamed buchanan patsies and others who are still mad about the last election.
