Perry took over as Gov. after Bush won in 2000, but he did have to run for election in his own right in 2002. He won overwhelmingly.

You can say that he was elected governor in 1998. By then, everyone knew that Gov. Bush was going to run for president and that the lieutenant gov. would be the (at that time) interim governor.

No he was elected in the last statewide election in 2002. He has two years remaining on his current term.
