Master percussionists drummed for most of December in Congo Square, in schools, in public housing complexes and at neighborhood centers, calling out for one week of peace -- a moratorium on murders in New Orleans from December 25 through the last second of 2003.

Murder did not vanish from the streets of New Orleans, even for that brief interval

Now THERE'S a surprise! Someone draw the connection for me. How is beating on a drum supposed to stop murder? Am I missing something? Maybe the better way would be to get the murderers off the streets.

Maybe painting my garage will cure world hunger. Mowing my lawn is almost certain to stop the spread of AIDS. And the answer to terrorism? Take out the garbage, of course.

Does any of this make sense even to Democrats?
