Help Block The Rove Amnesty Plan In Congress, Contact These Congressmen
Pubbie | 1/04/04 | Pubbie

Fellow Freepers, we need to try to block the Bush Amnesty Proposal that is being prepared to be released on Wednesday, by Freeping the GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A52647-2004Jan3.html

The gist of the Washington Post story is that Bush will propose 3 major components on Wednesday:

1) Give an amnesty to an unspecified amount of Illegal Aliens (Probably a little less than 500,000 people.)

2) Give some sort of Social Security benefits to Illegal Aliens.

3) Create some sort of Guest Worker program.

I believe that if we put enough grass roots pressure on the GOP House Judiciary Committee members (who are listed below) we can have parts 1 and 2 completely removed from any bill in the House, and have part 3 considerably watered down if a large amount of us protest by Phoning/Faxing/E-Mailing the GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee and demanding that they reject the Amnesty (Below is a list of how to contact all members of the GOP House Judiciary Committee memebers).

Now the Buchananites here on FR will no doubt say "The GOP doesn't listen to us/There is no difference between the two parties/ blah blah blah...". But they are wrong, there is considerable opposition within the House GOP to any amnesty for Illegal immigrants.

In August 2001 the House GOP was ready to rebel against the President and kill off the original Bush Amnesty proposal, until the 911 attacks buried the plan.

All GOP politicians (With the apparent exception of Bush and Rove) know very well that illegal immigrants won't vote for Republicans.

Think about it, all politicians absolutely MUST know who is and isn't going to vote for them.

The GOP has studied the 2000 and 2002 Election Exit polls in excruciating detail, and there is no evidence whatsoever that the GOP got any headway in the Latino vote in 2002. Furthermore polls show that no headway will be made by the GOP in the 2004 election.

That is why a number of major Republican politicians in November and December of 2003 have publicly said that there was major hostility to any Amnesty program within Congress.

For Example:

* Texas Governor Rick Perry said (during a meeting with Vicente Fox no less) that there was no support for any sort of Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants in Congress.

* Arizona Senator John Kyl said the McCain/Kolbe Amnesty bill, and other Illegal Immigrant bills, would be impossible to pass in 2004.

* Texas Congressman Lamar Smith (Who sits on the Judiciary Committee) said after the Ridge Trial balloon for Amnesty to all Illegal Immigrants:

"I don't see a substantial change in immigration policy in an election year," said Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, a House immigration subcommittee member who has expressed concern that an amnesty program for illegal immigrants could harm national security."

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dallas/nation/stories/121203dnnatimmigration.76a1.html

* And Finally Tom Tancredo said in the same article:

"We have enough support on our side to stop them from liberalizing immigration law," said Mr. Tancredo, R" Colo. "And on the other hand, I don't think I have enough [support] to advance our agenda. So, that's why I think we are sort of at loggerheads."

What we Freepers need to do is, instead of voting for the Constitution Party:

1) Phone up the below members of the GOP House Judiciary Committee Members (Who are all listed below) to complain about this Amnesty plan and tell them not to pass it.

2) Fax these Congressmen to tell them to reject the plan.

3) Email these Congressmen to reject an amnesty.

If enough of us complain, it will help block the major portions of the White House's plan in the House where most Republican Congressmen are already very leary of an Amnesty plan.

PS: In your letters/phone calls/E-mails to the below Congressmen, do NOT use any vulgarity.

Regards,

Pubbie

Perhaps so, but crossing the border without an entry visa is more often than not a misdemeanor offense.

There is a problem here.

Congress has a set protocol to deal with contacts from non-constituents.
Any member receiving a call, fax, or email from outside their district will simply pass it on to the senders own representative!
These are routine, they are given the header, "Respectfully submitted by ########" and forwarded as necessary.

The only exception I am aware of is to address a member by his title as head of a committee, or subcommittee.

Another valid way around might be to ask YOUR representative to forward your opinion to the members of this committee.
This has the benefit of sharing your opinion with your own rep., and not annoying him via his being the last to know after hearing it indirectly ;-)

Sorry if some here do not want to hear this, but I know it to be true.
It was told to me by a member of my congressman's staff when he was a guest speaker at our local central committee meeting.

There is already a mechanism of legal immigration. We've got more legal immigrants coming in than any other country in the world. Why do we now need a legal illegal immigration mechanism?

So, you haven't read it. But in an earlier post you gave the impression you had read it, which, clearly, was a lie.

Perhaps you were confused by Luis's typo post 15 should read.
So much so, that FReepers are calling to action other FReepers to oppose legislation (no)one has actually seen!
Only you have claimed to have read the proposal in post 48. Luis asked for a link. Could you please provide it or post the proposal here?
I'm anxious to read it myself.

....which SHOULD be a felony!

At the least we should give them the same treatment THEY give anyone they do not want in THEIR country.

BTTT. A guest worker program seems long overdue. I may use the assembled contact list to voice my appreciation of and approval for any efforts to normalize any guest workers we have now.

Using a stolen Social Security number and other fraudulent identification documents IS a felony crime --- even if you find yourself inadvertantly paying into Social Security taxes. But these are the guys Bush is considering handing a monthly Social Security check -- and most likely to get this new legal illegal immigration benefit.

The kind you're talking about -- aren't felony criminals. They crossed the border illegally --- if they didn't obtain stolen SS cards by hooking up with organized crime rings which provide those, and they aren't committing other crimes --- then you're right. But these are going to be denied Social Security checks unless they will lie and claim they really did steal a Social Security number.

Why is it wrong for Mexico to enforce it's immigration laws? Are you saying they're only racist if they deport an American who has no regard for and who has broken their laws and is living and working there?

Respectfully, that is nonsense. We deport a million people a year, while who knows how many hundreds Mexico deports to Guatemala. The issue I raised was Richard-so-and-so's contention that it ought to be a felony to cross the border without a visa, since by golly it is supposedly in Mexico (which I doubt).

Social Security checks could go south of border
Sergio Bustos
Gannett News Service

That's true, but a provision in the Social Security Act allows undocumented immigrants to get Social Security benefits if the United States and another country have a totalization agreement. Those immigrants would have to prove they had paid into the U.S. system.

Former undocumented immigrants also could become eligible if they later become legal residents. A recent investigation by the Office of Inspector General at the Social Security Administration found two such cases.

In one, a Mexican man who used his father's Social Security number for nine years in the 1970s claimed after becoming a legal resident in 1989 that he was owed benefits. He began collecting benefits in 1999.

And a Mexican woman who worked illegally under an invalid Social Security number for six years in the 1990s later petitioned for credit. She began receiving disability benefits in 1999.

"(The agency) does not consider the work-authorization status of the individual when they earned the wages," the inspector general's report said. "It only considers whether the individual can prove he or she paid Federal Insurance Contribution Act (FICA) taxes as part of this work."

To qualify for Social Security benefits, Mexicans must prove they worked in the United States at least 18 months. Payments are made on a prorated basis, depending on years worked in the United States. Those who work at least 10 years automatically would qualify for full benefits. Those who also worked in Mexico for a specific period of time could collect benefits in their home country, too.

This often-seen scurrilous charge of 'political pandering' seems fatally flawed, and mean-spirited as if to split conservatives or to make the President look corrupt. Who's to say that the sole guiding factor in any decision on immigration isn't really what is best for our nation?

It most definitely is law in Mexico --- if you go there you must have a passport of a tourist card which allows you to stay up to 6 months. Americans are deported from Mexico all the time --- and if you are deported, you are banned from reentering that country for a minimum of 5 years.

Name one country that has no immigration laws of any kind.

This quote from Tom Ridge, from his Q&A, always gets overlooked in the white hot fever to accuse President Bush of granting amnesty to illegal aliens -

''I'm not saying make them citizens,'' Ridge said. ``They violated our laws to get here. You don't reward that kind of conduct.''>>>>>>>>>

Yes, & here's something else Ridge said in the same Q&A, I believe. Except here he says "afford them some kind of legal status".

So if you 'reward' those who have "violated our laws" & 'give them legal status'.......it's the same as amnesty.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1037903/posts

Ridge answered:

"The bottom line is, as a country we have to come to grips with the presence of 8 to 12 million illegals, afford them some kind of legal status some way, but also as a country decide what our immigration policy is and then enforce it.

Interesting. There's nothing in that article which is unfair or unjust or worthy of getting one's blood pressure up. Someone pays into a fund with legal tender and meets the criteria and can legally prove it then they are entitled to the lawful benefit.

How do you prove you stold a Social Security card and used it? What if 6 other guys claim it was they who stold it? Do we need to give all 7 a monthly check because there is no way to prove which one stold the card? What happens if you claim that you stold the card of someone who died 10 years ago and it was really you working in that job --- not him?

Why do you think there was so much massive fraud in the 1980's amnesty --- the government admits there was ---- because the "undocumented" by definition have no proof.

I suggest doing things in addition to (not instead of) voting for the Constitution Party. I plan to contact my representative (who I voted for), vote for Constitution Party candidates like Michael Peroutka, and vote for conservative Republicans (such as those that will stop rewarding illegal immigration) where I can find them.
