Nigerian officials say recent clashes between police and a militant Islamic group in northeast of the country resulted in the death of at least two militants and a policeman. They say the fighting with the little-known group called Al Sunnah Jamma began this past week when the militants stormed several police buildings and a local government office in Yobe state. Officials say the radicals set the buildings on fire and stole vehicles.
News agency reports said some of the militants then fled to a neighboring town where authorities say they engaged police in a shoot-out. Police say at least one officer died in the violence several days ago.
Nigerian officials say the group is made up of university-educated Muslims who want a stricter version of Islamic law in the region. They say the radicals also call themselves Taleban, after the militant former rulers in Afghanistan.
Twelve northern states in Nigeria started adopting Islamic law, or Sharia, three years ago -- a move that has heightened tensions between Nigeria's Muslims and Christians. The country's population is roughly divided between the two religious communities.
