Bush wants to grant amnesty to over 8 million illegal aliens in this country. This is not just some simple plan to legitimize migrant workers to come into the country and then leave once the work is completed.
Are you sure? 8 million? Some other commentary guy said 12 million.
THE PRESIDENT: Well, first of all, I have constantly said that we need to have a immigration policy that helps match any willing employer with any willing employee. It makes sense that that policy go forward. And we're in the process of working that through now so I can make a recommendation to the Congress.
Let me also clarify something. This administration is firmly against blanket amnesty.

I believe we have closer to 20 million illegals in this country. California had 3 million alone in 2000. We have got to be closer to 5 million all by ourselves right now.
8 million is the number that everyone uses. Why? Census reports, I believe, but 8 is the magic number.
Tom Ridge even made outrageous statements about legitimizing illegals. I believe it was a precursor to Bush's talks about amnesty.

"I have constantly said that we need to have a immigration policy that helps match any willing employer with any willing employee. It makes sense that that policy go forward." And that equals legitimizing criminals, rewarding lawbreaking and encouraging others to do likewise. I mean, h*ll, why go the legal route when you can jump the border overnight, get all kinds of freebees (well free to you...the dumba*ss American taxpayers will foot the bills), get all kinds of political clout, AND get a pay under the table job to pour money back into the MEXICAN economy?.

Tom Ridge stated "The bottom line is, as a country we have to come to grips with the presence of 8 to 12 million illegals, afford them some kind of legal status some way, but also as a country decide what our immigration policy is and then enforce it." in Miami. Last I checked, he was part of the administration. Also, the President "is firmly against blanket amnesty", he did not say they were against amnesty. They could do an amnesty that could allow illegals that have been here more than say 10 years without incident to become legal and all others would be required to leave or what ever.
