Blame game
2003-12-30
Oklahoman Editorial
THERE'S a new epidemic spreading across the land, and we're not talking about the case of mad cow disease discovered in Washington state.
No, this particular contagion is more silly than dangerous, springing as it does from the ambitions of the Democratic candidates for president. Its chief symptom is to blame every problem in America on President Bush. It is indicated at nearly every bend of the campaign trail, most recently illustrated in the political reaction to the mad cow disease outbreak.
Sen. John F. Kerry, D-Mass., suggests the Bush administration is conspiring with the beef industry to block food safeguards. Rep. Richard Gephardt, D-Mo., said the president's party has blocked legislation in Congress to require better labeling of meat. The front-runner, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, charged the single mad cow case "raises concerns about the ability of this administration to protect the safety of our nation's food supply." Run for the hills!
There's no question the discovery of mad cow in the U.S. is a serious concern. Federal officials are trying to track meat that came from the infected animal. Consumers are being told there's no scientific evidence that people can contract the human variant of mad cow disease when beef has been slaughtered in a way that separates brain and spinal cord tissue from muscle. The Department of Agriculture says the infected dairy cow was slaughtered in that manner.
Even so, the administration was considering banning more cow parts from the production of ground beef (brain and spinal cord tissue already are banned). There are plans to increase surveillance and testing programs. Sounds reasonable.
The point is this shouldn't be a partisan issue. In fact, not every adverse development in the nation is due to presidential negligence or malfeasance. Political piling on serves little real purpose in this situation but, unfortunately, is unlikely to be quarantined and stamped out.

It's going to be a long 2004 for the George W. Bush haters. To help them along in the months to come, we present New Year's resolutions for avid Bush detesters, and a few for his fans as well. Start with the foes:
I resolve to examine at least one of the president's statements, acts, gestures or facial expressions without first insisting it proves that the man is a stupid chimp evil liar plastic-turkey-holding DRAFT DODGER MY GOD CAN'T YOU PEOPLE SEE HIM FOR WHAT HE IS?

Kristol said it yesterday.
On the other hand, have you seen this? :::Senate Dems Pressure DOJ on CIA Leak Probe Last week Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) and Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, questioned the commitment of the administration and the Justice Department to pursue the investigation into the alleged leak of a CIA officer's identity earlier in the year.
When will the pubbies start their attacks on the other memos?

I love Lange's cartoons for the reason you mentioned -- they are the old fashioned editorial cartoons. I think they are great and this one today went right along with the editorial.
