184 was to me about my doubting that being armed is the best way to fight terrorists. You noted the decline in intelligent discussion, citing my post.I did not respond to that particular observation, though others did!

You are deliberately obfuscating the issue. Traffic infractions are done through deliberate disobedience or through carelessness, not through not knowing about the law.

Name a law that we don't know about that we break, either occasionally or routinely.

Mulder, I asked you to name a law that someone had broken because they didn't know it existed. Traffic offenses do not fall in that category.

Of course they do.

Can you cite the exact penalites for various degrees of speeding in your state?

Some states you can get arrested for going 20+ over the limit, while in some states it's a heavy fine, and in others a smaller fine.

So not only are laws different in each state, so are the penalties which makes it even more confusing.

My point is simply that there are so many laws, it's impossible for anyone to know them all or comply with them all.

Well, if people at wine-tastings can't get the wine shipped home, don't you think that the wineries TELL THEM? As in the disclaimers in nursery catalogues that say certain plants can't be shipped to California or Arizona?

You guys sure do look for the smallest, most inconsequential incident on which to hang your hat! No one gets arrested for shipping wine into Indiana from a wine-tasting! The suppliers don't allow it.

Try something else. I will check back later.

The point is that when the speed limit says 45, you know that you are breaking the law if you exceed it. The penalties vary, but all know that exceeding it is the law.

Try again. One can know something is illegal without knowing the penalties for breaking it.

I know what the law is ,so that doesn't count!I know I should look for changes in speed limits.I know I drive with the traffic, pull over for those speeding more than I am!The hardest is my daughters neighborhoos(20mph),but narrow streets and kids on bikes make it necessary.

Traffic infractions are done through deliberate disobedience or through carelessness, not through not knowing about the law.

Okay, here's an example from a couple of years ago from right here on FR.

A lady had moved from New York to Florida, but failed to notify the NY state department of motor vehicles (or she notified them, and they lost it).

Anyway, she got a FELONY charge out of it. There were some other details that I forget, but I remember enough to know that she got a raw deal.

Name a law that we don't know about that we break, either occasionally or routinely.

I don't know all of the edicts in my state, let alone yours. If you're really curious, read your state edicts. I would concentrate on traffic laws (which for some reason you don't count, even though there can be severe consequences for breaking them), and edicts which deal with things that you're involved in (e.g., if you like to fish, look up the state edicts on fishing).

Also, try reading the federal tax statutes. Are you really sure you've declared everything on your 1040? Keep in mind that Business Week took a typical 1040 to 40 different accountants and got something like 20 different answers. So 19 of them were breaking the law.

Anyway, I find it laughable that anyone can assert that they know all of the laws and obey them.

184 was about your smart-a$$ed comment as follows:

"I am thrilled you can shoot down planes, detect suicide bombers, recognize who a bad guy is and blow him away before he drives a bomb ladentruck into anything.Your intelligence network is amazing." You noted the decline in intelligent discussion, citing my post.

It applied to other posts as well. Maybe I shouldn't have singled yours out.

I didn't say I knew all the laws. However, you are certain that I am breaking laws that I am ignorant about. How can you be certain?

I don't know all the fishing and hunting laws. However, were I to apply for a fishing or hunting license, I would make sure I understood those laws.

Same with opening a restaurant, applying for a mining permit, learning to fly a plane, getting a nursing license, or starting a liquor store. Specialized laws require that those in that business or practice learn them. That is a requirement for getting the license.

Perhaps you are unaware of the phrase "Ignorance of the law is no excuse."
