Saddam giving info on weapons [and billions in money he seized]

DUBAI (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein has given his U.S. captors information on hidden weapons and as much as $40 billion (22.5 billion pounds) he may have seized while he was Iraq's president, an Iraqi official has been quoted as saying.

"Saddam has confessed the names of people he told to keep the money and he gave names of those who have information on equipment and weapons warehouses," Iyad Allawi, a member of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council, told the London-based Asharq al-Awsat daily.

"The Governing Council is searching for $40 billion worth of funds seized by Saddam when he was in power and which has been deposited in Switzerland, Japan, Germany and other countries under the names of fictitious companies," Allawi said.

He said the council had asked international legal companies to track the money.

Allawi said interrogators were now focusing on whether Saddam -- arrested by U.S. forces this month and held at an undisclosed site -- had any links to militant groups.

"Interrogators are now focusing on the relationship between him and terrorist organisations and on funds paid to groups outside Iraq," Allawi told the newspaper.

It is not clear whether Saddam was ever behind ambushes that have killed at least 211 U.S. soldiers since Washington declared major combat over on May 1.

The capture of Saddam has not ended guerrilla activity in Iraq, which U.S. officials believe involves non-Iraqi militant Islamist guerrillas and Saddam loyalists.

And I'll bet he felt good doing it, too!

"$40 billion worth of funds seized by Saddam when he was in power and which has been deposited in Switzerland, Japan, Germany"

They should check Switzerland for any Clinton accounts.

FOSTER had been making overnight, two-day trips to Switzerland which his wife didn't know about. Indications are that he had a Swiss bank account which had been emptied of $2.7 million a week before he died. His last planned trip to Switzerland had, for reasons unknown, been canceled.

The role of Webster Hubbell and the First Lady at the Rose office law firm goes much deeper than Whitewater land fraud. During the 1980s, Mrs. Clinton and Webster Hubbell worked on a secret NSA project for a Rose office law firm
client. This too is also clearly documented by FOIA request. Mrs. Clinton, Hubbell and Vince Foster worked on a NSA contract for Systematics of Arkansas, a firm then owned by Riady partner Jackson Stephens.

What happened to the $286,000 (and change) that Sheila F. Anthony had transferred to her sister-in-law Lisa Foster four days before Vince Foster died? How much of it ended up in the pockets of James Hamilton?

Why did The New Yorker run a decidedly non-literary, rambling interview with Lisa Foster? Why did Lisa Foster claim Vince didn't take one-day trips to Switzerland, when American Express records show he did? Why didn't Lisa Foster discuss that little $286,000 (and change) payment she received just prior to her husband's death?

FOSTERGATE
by James R. Norman

"Was White House Deputy Counsel Vince Foster selling US secrets to Israel?
The CIA suspects he was."

TWO weeks before his death on July 20, 1993, White House Deputy Counsel Vincent W. Foster went into a deep funk. The official cause of death, given by former Independent Counsel Robert Fiske Jr. (who was later replaced by Kenneth Starr), was suicide driven by depression over, among other things, several newspaper editorials. But Vince Foster had a much bigger and darker reason to be seriously burned out. He had just learned he was under investigation for espionage.

Outrageous? To say the least. But a lengthy investigation has located over a dozen sources with connections to the intelligence community who confirm a shocking story of money laundering and espionage connected to the highest levels of the White House. Without grants of immunity, the
sources risk going to prison for violation of the National Security Act.

Virtually all have demanded anonymity.

According to a veteran Central Intelligence Agency operative close to the Foster investigation, Foster's first indication of trouble came when he inquired about his coded bank account at Banca Della Svizzera Italiana in Chiasso, Switzerland and found the account empty. Foster was shocked
to learn from the bank that someone using his secret authorization code had withdrawn all $2.73 million he had stashed there and had moved it to, of all places, the U.S. Treasury.

Then, according to credit card records reviewed by a private investigator who has revealed them, Foster canceled the two-day round-trip TWA and Swiss Air plane tickets to Geneva he had purchased on his American Express card through the White House travel office on July 1.

Discretely he began asking what was afoot, says the CIA source, confirming that someone in the White House tipped him off. It was bad news. The CIA had Foster under serious investigation for leaking high-security secrets to the State of Israel.

This information must surely be the first item in an unfolding misinformation campaign designed to get his former carriers of secrets running for cover (and into the arms of our troops, I hope). What better planting of untruths than by the Iraqi interrogators, not the Americans?

1.5 million fingers on trigger By Arnaud de Borchgrave (must read)

washtimes ^ | By Arnaud de Borchgrave

Swiss banking contacts have told this writer in the past two weeks that tens of billions of dollars have moved into Swiss accounts from the Gulf, mostly Saudi money that no longer felt safe at home. Nor does it feel secure in the United States. Which may account, at least in part, for the spectacular fall of the dollar vis-à-vis the euro.

At a Christmas Day dinner, one knowledgeable Arab-born Swiss oil trader was even willing to bet "any amount of money" that the Saudi royal family would be history by the end of 2004. We took him on. Others around the table agreed the House of Saud was headed for oblivion, but that this would take a few more years. The oil trader then added, "Many princes have already sent their families out of the country and their Swiss and French residences, usually empty at this time of the year, are full."

BTW I like the new mouse-over feature on the screen names. Makes it easier to decide who is wrong in the arguments on FR. no more having to go to profile pages!!

Sorry to disappoint you, but yes, we sometimes have to PLAY dumb...

As for Saddam's stash, I guess it's well spread between the usual laundering spots, and also in Western countries where it can make healthy interests. Recovering national treasures after a war or a revolution is always tricky, but IMHO all countries involved should anticipate and prepare a quick transfer of funds to the new Iraqi authorities.

You don't. But the interrogators are trained to compare info received from this putz to other info obtained from various sources and historical knowledge. Plus they're quite good at tricking folks into spilling the beans.

Within most lies, reside partial truths. No doubt we have ways of separating fact from fiction. Sure he'll lie, but a lier can never keep his lies straight and fumbles the truth while fabricating his lies.

Hindu News ^ | Dec. 28, 2003 | PTI

London, Dec 28. (PTI): Libyan leader Maommar Gadhafi, who recently abandoned his country's weapons of mass destruction programme, had armed al-Qaeda terror network with germ bombs, a report claimed today.

Libyan intelligence chief Musa Kusa told British secret service agency Mi5 that tens of thousands of weapons had been produced at 10 secret sites in the country, the Sunday Express said.

Kusa has named 500 al-Qaeda terrorists in Britain and the information he gave is being checked, it said.
