[history]
The American military intervention in Afghanistan and then in Iraq has had two declared objectives: the first and more immediate, to deter and defeat terrorism; the second, to bring freedom, sometimes called democracy, to the peoples of these countries and beyond.

Bought "What Went Wrong?" I purchased the audio of "Crisis of Islam" from audible.com - that way I can partake of its wisdom without moving my lips.

If they rerun it, as they are likely to do, catch the C-Span interview with him. I was particularly struck by his evocation of Washington's letter to the Rhode Island Hebrew Congregation and his obvious love of our founding principles, clearly connected to his emigrating here and becoming a citizen.

But as the struggle rages and intensifies, certain things that were previously obscure are becoming clear. The war against terror and the quest for freedom are inextricably linked, and neither can succeed without the other. The struggle is no longer limited to one or two countries, as some Westerners still manage to believe. It has acquired first a regional and then a global dimension, with profound consequences for all of us. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good read.

One of the best analysis I have read on the subject. I think that most of us realize that establishing democracy is going to be difficult, but from reading the Iraqi Blogs I don't think it's going to be quite as difficult as many of us think.
On one of the blogs they told of talking to an Iraqi cab driver in Basra who was uneducated and stunned these young Iraqis by his understanding of the situation and his total belief in it finally happening.
