in 1998 he began serving a sentence of six to 10 years

So the plan was that (at the earliest) he'd be released from prison in 2004. Yet, he's out of prison and found dead in a garage. Does that mean (gasp!) that sentences are mere words that do not actually indicate how long someone must stay in prison? I'm shocked!

In Nebraska sentencing is a joke. We release all criminals from jail as early as possible, and still require that law-abiding citizens rely fully upon the 911 system and law enforcement to protect them from criminals by denying the law-abiding citizen their God-given right to keep and bear arms.
