A five-month-old baby boy remains hospitalized after allegedly being placed inside a hot oven by his own mother who is now in custody.

Agence France-Presse reports the child is in a Swedish hospital, suffering second-degree burns all over his body from the incident which took place last weekend.

"It's a terrible story, but at least he's in stable condition for the time being," said Margreth Jonson of the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenberg.

The incident reportedly took place on Sunday, and the boy's 30-year-old mother was arrested two days later as police grew suspicious that she had intentionally inflicted the injuries.

"The baby's mother was arrested for attempted murder," police inspector Harriet Persson said, according to AFP.

While police are keeping tight-lipped about the exact circumstances of the case pending the woman's expected indictment in January, Swedish news reports have stated the mother allegedly tried to kill her son by baking him in a heated oven.

She is reportedly being held at a psychiatric emergency ward as she awaits a formal charge.
