We must have several million laborers of the type we now refer to as illegals and that is just a plain fact. To argue otherwise is naive.

You are the one who fails to grasp reality. The millions of illegals currently here are a direct result of the Reagan amnesty. Another amnesty would encourage another tidal wave of illegals. Yes, something has to be done. A good start would be to enforce the laws already on the books.

He's pretty 'goofy' he read a tagline in # 92 (The Rio Grande is NOT America's new Ellis Island.), then suggested the poster move.

Looks like poster #92 lives in CA.......Maybe 'goofy' expects all citizens (in 4 states) to move from the Rio Grande area.

That's a good point. For Mexico's leaders, it's the best of all worlds - they export their poor and in return get billions in greenbacks. Such a deal! And we're stupid enough to let it happen.

Agriculture keeps getting more efficient so there is less of a need for workers. In fact, there are too many farmworkers here now for the number of farm jobs available.

Just the food production argument alone is pretty much irrefutable. I'm saying that Americans talk out of both sides of their mouths. They hate illegals yet they all use them even though they don't realize it or won't admit it.

I'm telling you that they are in every industry in this nation and still there is no labor surplus. Quite the reverse. I repeat. Any business man will tell you they cannot find qualified workers who want to work. I know. I have lists of things needs doing around my ranch and they go undone because I can't get anyone who wants to work. I quit trying.

Careful. You're making sense. Not popular on this thread. The illegal haters just will not see the other side. They don't know these people, have never spent any real time with them and they think they are all criminals. Quite the reverse in my experience.

This problem can be fixed. Bush has not even said what he is going to do yet everyone is ready to jump all over him. SOMETHING realistic must be done.

When was the last time you walked into one of their apartments or homes? You try living 4, 6, or 8 to a room.

I don't like the drain on the healthcare system either but people that poor just can't get medical help on their own. If a guest worker system were put in place and rigidly enforced business would be forced to pay them enough to take better care of themselves. And we would pay more for everything. There are no free lunches.

We now have a false and immoral system which we are all benifiting from. Border areas are not benefiting. They are taking the hit in every way and it needs to stop. It won't stop without a system.

Personally I would never live down there. Who ever is in charge they have really let the whole area go to hell. They need to ellect officials who will enforce the laws. Allowing people to live in slums like animals is not legal in this country.

My idea of a foolproof identity card and jail for busineses that hire workers without the card would work. It only needs the legislation and the enforcement. Right now they pay a coyote a thousand dollars at least just to get here. Charge them a thousand for the card. Every year.

You don't need the INS to enforce this either. Let the local police do it. Make it a $10,000 fine for first offense. That would be a lot of money for the local communities . On second offense put them in jail and confiscate their property and sell it to a competitor that is willing to play by the rules. More money for dollar short communities.

It won't take long for the whole situation to turn around and awful areas like the Rio Grande in Texas can be cleaned up.

I've answered that question several times in this thread. We have always imported labor. Where do you think China Towns come from? Why was I able to get Mexican food in Kansas in the fifties. Because there were Mexicans there. I know. I dug ditches with them in the sixties.

Yeah well, "Dubya" was 'in charge' here for several years. Search Bush/TX 'colonia's see if you can find many improvements he made in the TX border area's, for the mexican AMERICANS already there. See if you can find if he's ever even BEEN to the TX colonia's, to SEE how poor mexican AMERICANS live down there.

A guest worker program would only create a demand for new illegals, since the guest workers would command a higher wage and greater protections and benefits. What it boils down to is that a "true" illegal would be more marketable than a worker who signs up for and who is under the restrictions of the guest worker program.

Bingo. Yet another reason why this plan is insane and will do nothing to allievate the situation. MAYBE if the govt cracked down on businesses who hire illegals a guest worker might, MIGHT have you, have a chance at success. But the market will always go for the cheapest alternative.

Me too. I've been seeing these kinds of posts on the illegal threads. Well despite what the lefties think, I don't shop at walmart, for the cheapest chinese product I can find. I always buy American first, don't care about the price. I look at it the same way I look at charity and political donations. I make them because they support something I believe in. In the case of buying American the something I believe in is supporting American business. I am an American. I want to support American business to help keep America strong, and Americans employed.
