JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A former Miss South Africa has been attacked by a hippopotamus and bitten on the leg, local media report.
Media reports on Wednesday said Diana Tilden-Davis, Miss South Africa 1991 and a runner up in the 1991 Miss World contest, was attacked while canoeing in the Okavango Swamps of neighbouring Botswana and was airlifted to Johannesburg's Milpark hospital.
"We are treating her and she's in a stable condition," an official at the hospital told Reuters, but declined to give further details.
Earlier this month, another South African woman was killed by a hippo while she and her husband were on their honeymoon in Botswana.
Hippos, which can weigh up to two tonnes and have a frightening set of teeth, are among the most dangerous animals in Africa.
They are highly territorial and may attack if a person finds themself in the unenviable position of standing between the water and a hippo while the animal is feeding on the land.
They also charge boats in the water if they feel their territory has been invaded.

I have dreamed of visiting the Okavango Delta for many years. The animal that has harmed the most humans in Africa is the Hippo. You would think that most people would have learned to steer clear of them by now. I'm sure she was with a skilled guide.

Walt Disney taught me that only people are dangerous and violent.

Hope the attack doesn't leave scars.
Someone needs to post her pic since she is a beauty queen.
Her name sounds English/Brit/American so I am assuming she is caucasion.

Just reading the headline I was wondering how long it would take for someone to bring up moose bites.

I have a pet Miniature Hippo, it wouldn't harm a fly. This is a set up! Who did the hippo bite and when did he bite?
