Don't feel too sorry for yourself, Ol' Fur Coat has a wife at home that was surely watching the broadcast...Actually, Joe's wife left him and took the 2 girls. Joe has been Mr Mom for them and is taking it really hard. He lived for his girls and is finding it hard to cope.
Not an excuse for his actions, just a look into his mind set.
