Iran warns Israel against striking nuclear reactor

Iranian leaders warned Israel on Monday against an attack on the Muslim country's nuclear reactor, following remarks by Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz last week, according to which Israel would not allow Iran to achieve nuclear capability.

"He made a damn mistake," Iranian president Mohammad Khatami said Monday Mofaz's statements the day before to the effect that Israel would take care not to harm Iranian citizens should a strike be launched against the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities.

On Sunday, Mofaz, of Iranian origin, spoke on Israel Radio's Farsi (Persian) weekly radio phone-in program broadcast to an audience of millions in Iran. Mofaz told listeners that, 'if deemed necessary, we will strike nuclear facilities in Iran."

Israel has said a nuclear Iran would pose a grave danger to the world and is urging the European Union and the international community to help halt a "nightmare scenario" from becoming reality.

Also responding to Mofaz's remarks, former Iranian President, Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani warned, 'our response will be severe.'

Two years ago, Rafsanjani said in a speech that the Islamic world wanted to obtain an atomic bomb for the purpose of wiping Israel off the map.

"Israeli attacks will be to no avail. The Iranian Islamic Republic will respond very harshly to a possible Israeli aerial strike. They will pay a heavy price. If Israel acts irrationally, it will not achieve anything, and they will regret it, Rafsancani told the Saudi Arabian newspaper Al-Riyadh.

The head of the Iranian air force General Seyed Reza Pardis said if Israel launches an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, it will be "digging its own grave," the Mehr news agency reported.

He later warned that an attack would have serious consequences beyond the imagination of the Israeli leaders.

Whether the Israeli threats are serious or not, he said, Iran's armed forces are fully prepared to defend sensitive sites and the country's airspace.

Neither confirming nor denying that it has nuclear weapons, Israel has been accepted as a nuclear power by the US since 1969. According to some experts, Israel has at least 200 nuclear weapons.

Israel bombed Iraq's French-built Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981 destroying Iraqi hopes for producing nuclear weapons.

For months Israel has been trying to focus international attention on what it perceives is the real obstacle to peace in the Middle East.

Last month the head of Israel's overseas intelligence service said Iran's nuclear program posed the biggest threat to the existence of the Jewish state since its creation in 1948.

Last week Iran bowed to pressure from the international community by signing the additional protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which allows intrusive snap inspections of its nuclear sites.

In light of that, whatever consequences Iran has in mind for a response to an Israeli strike are mild. In my view the sooner the IAF acts, the better. The cost of not acting, or of waiting too long to act, are too horrible to contemplate.

I'm very surprised Muslims would contemplate doing such a thing. After all, as I understand it, "The Dome Of The Rock" is one of Islam's most holy places, and it is in Israel.

;)

That's "occupied Palestine" in the Muslim world. I guess holy sites are less important than killing Jews. Killing Jews seems to be of paramount importance in the Islamic world recently.

I suspect I may have a case of logical relativism. But I KNOW the leaders of Iran do.

We will destroy you unless you attack us in which case we will destroy you even sooner and more completely. Nothing will be left, but what is left will regret this.

-Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani

'our response will be severe.'

I'm sure the Israelis are quaking in their boots. They can take it out and if Iran so much as breaths, the rest of Iran will be gone too.

When the "Dome of the Rock" was under Ottoman and Jordanian control, it was one of Islam's most insignificant shrines. Its importance went up only because it is under Israeli control.

"The Iranian Islamic Republic will respond very harshly to a possible Israeli aerial strike."

What are they going to do--fund a number of radical terrorist organizations and urge them to launch suicide attacks against innocent Israelis? Oh, wait...

---several months ago, I saw a military assessment that stated that the Israeli Air Force could destroy all enemy armed services offensive capabilities in 48 hours.

My question then was "Why not do it ?--"

Yes, why those Muzzle-ems might even start thinking about trying to KILL Israeli Jews by bombing nightclubs, pizzerias, buses full of children, etc! Let's do everything in our power to bend over for them so that won't happen!

What's that? They already do all those things? Hm. Go figure. Okay, so what is your threat again, you murderous towel-headed tyrants?

I hope Israel does take out the Iranian reactor, because if Iran can make a nuke it will become their military Viagra. Keep them Muslims impotent and limp, and the world will be a much safer place.

One reason: George W. Bush. The Bush administration has been pressuring the Israeli government not to act against Iran. Sooner or later, preferably sooner, Prime Minister Sharon will choose between angering a friend and Isreal's very survival.

This is actually worrisome. I would take these nutballs at their word. What if Iran already has a few nukes? The Mullahs know they're living on borrowed time anyway (the internal revolution is near), so what do they have to lose by unleashing everything they have at Israel? They're dead men anyway.

Delivering them is another matter entirely. The USAF and/or RAF would most likely intercept any nuke-laden Iranian fighter planes, so they would probably have to fire off some MRBMs. Let's just hope our ABMs are up to the task.

"The Iranian Islamic Republic will respond very harshly to a possible Israeli aerial strike."

Gotta love those Iranians. Never short on threats and hot air but can't fight a battle to save their lives. What are they gonna do, launch an F-14 against the Israeli Air Force? March 100,000 shoeless young Iranian men across the desert and "attack" Israel? Appeal to the UN? Ha Ha. The Israelis continue to fight for their survival and bravo to them for their backbone and moral courage.

Watch their subs. Perhaps the US will allow them to tank over Iraq, but I think State'll block that. Israel knows this and will come from the sea this time. WIth German-built boats, if I'm not mistaken. Ironic. Beautiful!

Didn't part of the Dome actually collapse while it was under Muzzle control several hundred years ago due to neglect? The only time the Muslims consider it sacred is when it's controlled by someone else.

Don't be. Aside from Rafsanjani, other members of the Iranian regeime as well as members of the Saudi Royal Family are on the record stating that casualties of as many as 50 million Arabs would be acceptable to destroy the Jewish State.
