"museum of black history"
Why on Earth did the black community, if we are to believe really wanted this museum since 1915, need the gubmint to build it?
Crouch simply does not get it.

Criminally bad.
I think this is the fault of the President's political adviser, Karl Rove, who works with an all-white staff and seems to have absolutely no idea how to appeal to black people Race, race, race,
The author sounds like a racist.
What ever happened to appealing to voters intellect and patriotism instead of the color of their skin ?
Therein lies the problem.

It's not the Republicans keeping the Blacks locked up in failing schools and housing complexes. The Dems like to keep them right where they are. That way, they're forced to vote Democrat to get their next free government meal. They either support the Democrat, or starve.

"After all, the White House made more of the President's decision to refurbish the home of Frederick Douglass than it made of building this museum!"
And did his refurbishing of Frederick Douglass's home make a damn bit of difference to blacks? No.
Why would this be even the slightest bit different? My guess is, if it was Rove's doing, it was because he knew that if the WH made a big deal of it it would be misrepresented into a "purely symbolic" attempt by Republicans as a "token" appeal to blacks, just as empty as every other.
When it comes to any Republican in high office doing anything positive regarding blacks, the media is guaranteed to make it a lose-lose, every time.

Very bad advice.
No, it's called good taste. This President doesn't pander to the race card in quite the same way as Clinton did.

And then CBSNBCABCCNN would interview Jesse Jackson and Osama Mama and Hildy-beast about how Bush is really a klansman and it's just a lame and despicable attempt to woo black voters and isn't gonna work-hallelujah.

Who would Bush invite to the museum signing ceremony?
Al Sharpton? Jesse Jackson? The NAACP who will endorse his opponent? The Congressional Black Caucus who is working against him at every step?
Did Clinton invite Right to Life or the Christian Coalition to the White House to sign the directive promising religious freedom in the public schools?

"Here you have something coming to fruition that Negroes have been trying to get done since 1915. I suppose the author could ask why Presidents Carter and Clinton didn't sign such legislation. And then, there were OTHER Democratic Presidents who could have signed such legislation weren't there? But I doubt the author cares. It is much easier and more fun to attack President Bush for doing something Democrat Presidents didn't do. Some sort of logic there I guess.

This is becuase true conservatives don't cubbyhole people and think of them as different based on superficial things like the color of their skin. We tend to look inside and make character-based judgements.
Liberals are the kings of "divide and conquer". They look at a person who has a different ethnicity and see a constituency. Every negative in that person's life is due to their heritage, but none of the positive.
The GOP's ineffectiveness at pandering to hyphenated Americans is a sign of hope, not an opportunity for improvement.

Nothing that the black racist thugs would like better than a bidding war, maybe raise the fee paid for the votes of dead blacks to $10. There never will be a bidding war, however, until a significant number of the house and field hands, themselves, leave the dem plantation and the ghost of Ole Massa Roosevelt and think independently.
The most beautiful chance is NOW! They've got Al Sharton in the race. The dems would never select Al to do anything but buff up some shoes or break some heads. But, if he ran as an independent and took 20% or more of the black vote with him, both parties would court blacks in the future.
Can you imagine the threat to the step-n-fetchits in the fully segregated Congressional Black Caucus that a Sharpton run, with slate, as an independent would cause? NEVER HAPPEN!!! The dems, step-n-fetchits, and black racist thugs simply could not allow Al to branch off on his own. They've too much to lose!

Blacks dont get it, Blacks are becoming irrelevant. The rise in the Hispanic population is making the Blacks political positon less and less powerful. There is no Rainbow Coalition. The Blacks are the ones to be hurt.

Liberals are the kings of "divide and conquer". They look at a person who has a different ethnicity and see a constituency. Every negative in that person's life is due to their heritage, but none of the positive. The left uses "Victimhood propaganda."
They find someone, like a "poor" woman, and demand the feds pay for her abortions "to save her life" because she has Lupus, Diabetes, etc.
Then, it sets a president to push the matter further, to the less poor who can't afford abortions either.
Then it moves on to a "choice" for all because it's not "fair" for some to get reproductive health care and some don't.
Before you know it, tax payers are paying for all abortions. If they don't, they're "Mean, selfish, don't care, hate women...."
That's how they get their power and their agenda past the voters, and into the courts. Step by step, inch by inch. Give one inch, and incrementalism will bring their goals into frutation.
Remember, all the gays wanted - at first - was to be "tolerated."

To date, four African Americans have served as United States Senators. In 1870, Hiram Revels of Mississippi became the first African American Senator. Five years later, Blanche K. Bruce of Missisppi took the oath of office. It would be nearly another century, 1967, before Edward Brooke of Massachusetts followed in their historic footsteps. In 1993, Carol Moseley-Braun was seated as Senator from Illinios.
The first three were Republicans! and hopefully Herman Cain
will win in Georgia in 2004.

Thank goodness. Shows me things have not gone over to the dark side (no pun intended). GOPers should focus on being the RIGHT party for everyone. The only "extra effort" needed for blacks or anybody else to make sure they are getting THAT message. If they don't want to drink from the well that's their problem.

How do you explain this: __________________________________________- Presidential Message: Kwanzaa 2003 19 December 2003 I send greetings to those observing Kwanzaa. Celebrated by millions across the world, Kwanzaa honors the history and heritage of Africa. This seven-day observance is an opportunity for individuals of African descent to remember the sacrifices of their ancestors and reflect on the Nguzo Saba. Kwanzaas seven social and spiritual principles offer strength and guidance to meet the challenges of each new day. During this joyous time of year, Americans renew our commitment to hope, understanding, and the great promise of our Nation. In honoring the traditions of Africa, Kwanzaa strengthens the ties that bind individuals in communities across our country and around the world. Laura joins me in sending our best wishes for a joyous Kwanzaa. GEORGE W. BUSH

Bill signing photo ops are sop. This is a small item, positive or negative, but it's a missed opportunity.

Jewish World Review?
Lol, I'll get flamed for saying this, but in my many years of experience serving with black soldiers from all walks of life, they had the utmost contempt for pansy, liberal Jews who would spout off all the civil rights jargon, but couldn't defend themselves in a fight.
You think the gulf between blacks and the GOP is large? I think the gulf is larger between black folks and liberal (read most) Jews.
