Typical Newsday BS. President Bush has never indicated any interest in reestablishing a draft.

The people pushing the draft are on the left, like
Charlie Rangel.. They think it'll turn the public against Bush and the military.
To: presidio9
Exactly. Its only been Rats like Charlie Rangel who has been in support of such a move.

Its the work of Mr Rangel... he keeps this notion in the air like Bush is seriously thinking about it.
I read recently on FR that people are enlisiting in record numbers.

A draft would be good. It's essential for a good fire in the fireplace.

The left wants a draft, partly in order to depopularize the military and partly in order to subject young adults to the statist programming many of them miss by attending private schools (hence the demand for the conscription of "rich kids" too). They know they look like idiots if they are the only ones favoring it, so for cover they say the right secretly wants one as well.

I once heard some quiet rumors that the Defense Department might be open to drafting medical personnel (doctors and nurses, I guess) if they felt there was a strong need in a crisis. And I only repeat this because it seems to make a little sense for them to keep an open mind about this option
But a return to the old-style draft of graduating high school seniors is completely stupid, and Newsday writers know it -- they're just trying to see if they can manufacture a little anti-Bush hysteria.

It's always illuminating to see who is pushing for what legislation. When organizations that are perennially hostile to the US military and foreign policy are adamant about including gays, women and the draft for our military, it should give one pause to question their motives.
To: presidio9
What a dil**. The Dems are pushing for a draft, not Republicans.

Slavery is freedom? Some here think so. It's a bizarro world where up is down and heroes are cowards.

In addition, a draft would probably operate as in the Vietnam War, drafting a disproportionate number of poor men. This will cause class antagonisms, all to the benefit of the Democrats. And they will use these antagonisms to further their statist agenda.
