I remember those duck and cover drills as well. Oddly enough I too was in elementary school in N.O. during the Cuban crisis. Also remember the family going out to dinner on a Friday night then going to some parking lot to tour the bomb shelters for sale. Odd times.

I was unlucky to live in Chicago when stupid Daley put the siren on after we won some championship...those drills in parochial school where a nightmare!

Small world...maybe we crossed paths - literally! I went to Westgate Elementary, right next to St. Lawrence. This was actually in Kenner. We did the 'duck and cover' but it probably wouldn't have made a world of difference as the whole back wall was louvered glass!
