TAX SOFTWARE: WHICH ONE IS THE BEST??
Posted on 12/21/2003 7:34:16 AM PST by pctech
It's getting to be that time of year again, and I'm looking for tax software to file online. I have TaxAct and am considering using it, but before I do I thought I'd put this question out to the Freeper community and see what everyone else is going to use. Have at it!

I tried Quicken a couple of times and dumped it in favor of my local CPA.
Getting help info on line is a disaster and with states changing their regs long after the Feds do you never get an up-to-date state tax form.

I haven't had too many problems filing online, but getting a tax program that doesn't have a lot of spyware it in is my concern.

I like Kiplinger TaxCut, now sold by H&R Block.
Don't forget to clean out your closets, enter everything into ItsDeductible (or Deduction Pro), and run down to the Salvation Army. We saved several hundred $$ last year.
I stopped using TurboTax years ago, it had become too bloated and complex.

I used Turbo Tax twice but the last time I tried to use it, it was just too user "un"friendly. Is Kiplinger downloadable?

I use and like TurboTax. Last year, however, it was bundled with some spyware (C Dilla) that takes special prodecures to remove.
If this years' version does not include C Dilla, I heartily endorse it.

I stopped using TurboTax years ago, it had become too bloated and complex. Its bloated, full of Intuit's spam, and it contains that neat little spyware program called C-Dilla. It took some effort to extract all traces of that from my machine last year. No more Turbotax - I'll use pencil and paper.

I suggest that you find some on-line reviews of the various products available. Some are far more accurate in their results than others. The reviews are why I've been using TurboTax for 5 years now. (I confess that I haven't checked the reviews in the last couple of years. I'm comfortable with TurboTax.)

dumped it in favor of my local CPA.Actually I use the software for the first cut, then run it by an IRS-approved tax preparer before sending.

It's a spyware program. I cannot remember everything about it from last year, but it creates it's own directory (called C_DILLA) which contains a .dat file. TurboTax has instructions for removing it on their homepage.

My tax return will be pretty simple, have been for years. Didn't make much, going to college, earned income credit, not much else. I've used TurboTax and TaxCut both the last 3-4 years, but used TaxAct which I got at the suggestion of a Freeper last year. Worked pretty good and cost only $9.95 to file online.
