I can't say for sure. I know one fairly moderate-to-conservative guy at Michigan State. I know a few more here and there who may be liberal, but not absurdly so. No doubt we need more conservatives. But then, conservatives tend to be smarter and go for the really big money! : )

Spanier Announces Creation of New Young Republicans student organization at Penn State
Penn State President Graham Spanier announced today the formation of a new student organization to replace the now defunct extremist right-wing group formerly known as the "College Republicans". Free speech does not include hate speech Spanier proclaimed, as he formally closed down the College Republicans student organization.
President Spanier also announced that he had convened a task force consisting of the Vice President for Equity (name withheld), the Diversity Control Board, The Racial Classification Committee, leaders of the LGBTAP (a.k.a A-Z), Womyn's Concerns, and progressive moderate Republicans who will lead the new organization.
The task force has agreed on the following interim charter (students are encouraged to suggest additional guidelines):
The New Young Republicans pledge to:
- Reject the hate and meanspirited recent history of the Republican party as characterized by the 12 years of Reagan-Bush, the Gingrich takeover of Congress in 1994, and the fradulent election of George W. Bush in the 2000 Florida election.
- Respect the Constitutional right to privacy that is the basis for a woman's right to choice in all aspects of her reproductive health, without any limits or restrictions.
- Recognize the right to same sex marriage.
- Embrace and celebrate the homosexual lifestyle as equivalent to that of heterosexuals.
- Work to ban hate speech and impose strict sanctions on violators, including permanent expulsion from the University.
- Support affirmative action in college admissions, government, and private enterprise.
- Support universal health care supported by the government for all citizens of North America.
- Reject any racist controls on illegal immigration.
- Work to ban the possession of handguns and assault weapons, except for government officials, police, and UN peacekeeping forces.
- Support the United Nations and the UN Commision on Global Governance.
- Work toward the US ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.
- Support universal disarmament and the elimination of nuclear weapons.
President Spanier reemphasized his desire to make students of Republican persuasion feel safe on campus, and comfortable that they would be graded fairly at Penn State, provided they follow the diversity guidelines set for them.

I forgot to add 2 other parts of the New Young Republican platform:
- Ban the possession or operation of an SUV without a government permit granted on the demonstration of need (e.g. government social worker or environmental control inspector).
- Embrace the UN designated Biospheres and connecting corridors to help restore North America to it's pristine and harmonious condition that existed until white Europeans arrived to destroy the peaceful Native American culture that had existed since the catastophic global warming at the end of the Younger Dryas period, 11,000 years ago.

Just got an e-mail from our dean's administrative assistant (we all got it). It talked about the importance of the diversity committee and the work they've done, yada yada ya, and it mentioned a series of "community based theatrical workshops" to heighten everyone's sensitivity about diversity issues.
So I'm chuckling, right? Then I read "Your unit has been assigned to attend on [date]." And now I'm really laughing because there's no way in the world I'll be going.

The University will support their efforts to launch an alternative for student Republicans. They will probably be called "New Republicans for Marx"

I owe everyone here an apology. I received a less than curteous message earlier today from someone who berated me for leaving out one of President Doctor Spanier's key conditions that he imposed as a condition for certification of the New Young Republican student organization.
The condition I failed to report was one of Spanier's top 5, and was so obvious that I am embarrassed that I made such a careless error. It was:
- Demand the repeal of the Bush tax cuts for the rich.
I thank President Doctor Spanier for his wisdom, foresight, and compassion for women, children, minorities and the poor.
