Head to head, Daryl Lamonica and the Raiders George Blanda, Daryl Lamonica and Ken Stabler as the third-string QB. Those were the days.

Joe Namath this morning....."Whoa! did I talk to some TV reporter at the game? Hope I didn't do anything stupid."
To: Richard Kimball
The Jets turned the Super Bowl from a game with all the relevence of the pro bowl (the first one didn't even sell out) into the biggest sports event in the world. The Chiefs probably would have done it the next year, but the Jets did it one year sooner. Who was the second man on the moon?
Uhhhhhh.....Hank Stram?

If you're that old and get drunk on the job, you have got a REAL problem.I don't think Joe was on the job. He was watching a football game on the sidelines like he always does whenever the most famous NY Jet of all time attends a game. The sideline babe went to Joe. If he was in fact drunk, then he was in the same condition as 50,000 other fans at the stadium.

I am sick of the gruff female voice and the pronunciation of college as "callege". I went to Syracuse U--you're right about all the Communications majors at the Newhouse school. I think they get the "callege" pronounciation because 1/3 of the 16,000 undergrad population is from "Longhh GhileLand."

I guess Joe didn't got back to college just for the degree!

Yeah.....once I discovered that Joe
was not working but was, in fact, a spectator, I made the following post at # 51.
Mea Culpa.
I misread the thread and thought Joe was the interviewer and drunk on the job.
If he was just sitting in the stands watching the game....shame on the TV folks.

>>>>>>>>Let this Irishman tell you, Joe was not sober.<<<<<<
Ah yes, well irish to irish, I have been right there where Joe was, but it was in my younger days....I might think it now, but am married ....and happily....so I keep my yap shut. But damn, isn't it funny what a little irish whiskey will do to a person? hehehe
What I love is all the shock expressed, like Joe was some kind of moral pillar. This is the biggest booty hound of the 70s, what did anyone expect? This is like putting a drink in Pat Summerall's , Mickey Mantle's (Whitey Ford's do I need to list more?) hand and expecting him not to take a sip. Put a broad in front of Broadway Joe and he is immediately on the booty hunt.

The classes Joe is taking are not on campus. They are completed right in his own living room or office or wherever. Great program. Great classes. Very hard work.

I've heard rumors of girls lined up outside his motel room during his college days, but they're only rumors, right?

That's an absolutely accurate description of what happened.
He was smashed.
Did it hurt his reputation? Heck, it enhanced it.
I remember him by the swimming pool in Miami before the historical Super Bowl sipping a drink talking to reporters.
Sure, you can analyze it down to the point where it's sad and unfortunate, but if he wants to pickle his liver while enjoying life, I can't begrudge him that.
I thought it was the funniest live interview I'd ever seen.

Turns out that last night the N. J. Jets were honoring players from their first 40 years. So if Joe seemed to having a good time this is why.
* The Jets last night honored their "Four Decades Team," which was introduced on the field at halftime. Among the members of the team included five current players, RB Curtis Martin, Mawae at C, DE John Abraham, LB Mo Lewis and T Jason Fabini. As you might expect, DE Mark Gastineau made the biggest spectacle of himself when announced and Joe Namath received the loudest ovation.

I didn't see it, but unless Joe was tailgating, or he had a flask in his coat, he was sober. The Jets will not serve beer during a night game (after 8 pm) at Giants stadium. Their fans are too wacky and the alcohol just adds to it.....

I think someone on WFAN radio in New York was checking out your comments on this thread last night. On the NFL show this morning on the radio, the host was complaining about that Joe Namath interview last night -- and he specifically blamed the television crew for the incident.
"Remember -- she asked him one question, and it was very clear from his answer that he had probably been at a few Christmas parties that afternoon. They cut back to the game for one play, then went back and she asked him another question . . . There was no reason for them to do that when they knew what kind of shape he was in!!"

Growing up in rural Ohio, I was a cheerleader, a majorette (anyone remember those?) and an all around "goody two shoes". Joe Namath was the first man I ever looked upon as a "sex symbol". In the early 70s, only two men personified sex.... Joe and Jim Morrison.
They both scared the hell out of me, and that's why I was virtually the only virgin in my graduating class.
To this day, I don't know whether to thank them or curse them...:)
