Libya 'to give up WMD'
BBC ^ | 19/12/2003 | BBC

Posted on 12/19/2003 2:32:59 PM PST by Da_Shrimp

Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi has said his country sought to develop weapons of mass destruction capabilities but will dismantle this programme completely, Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced. "This decision is an historic one and a courageous one and I applaud it," Mr Blair said.

Colonel Gaddafi had told him the process of dismantling the programme would be "transparent and verifiable", the prime minister said in a statement from Durham Cathedral.

The range of all Libya's missiles would be restricted to "no more then 300km, he added.

Mr Blair said Britain had been engaged in talks with Libya for nine months.

"Libya came to us in March following successful negotiations on Lockerbie to see if it could resolve its weapons of mass destruction issue in a similarly cooperative manner," he said.

Weeping and moaning at the DNC.

Oh dear, what a Dumbocrat dilemma. The economy in full throttle, Saddam caught, Osama on the run, and now Muammar falls into line. What issues will be left for poor Dumbocrat candidates to fight over?

Don't worry.....the Dumbos still have abortion....their very favorite issue.

Seeing that partial birth abortion is in the courts, looks like the Dumbos'll have to dream up even more heinous ways to kill the unborn in order to keep their base happy.

Great point, it will be discussed at happy hour, parties tonight and tomorrow and Sunday.

So when the Scream Liberal heads appear on tv and the whining editorials appear tomorrow and Sunday, they are old and irrelevant to reality.

He can't pronounce Kaddafi's first name either. Not that it really matters. The guy is such a whack job that he never promoted himself past Colonel.

I guess I can relate.
We have Mexico and Canada actually ON our borders, with no fence.
I wish we had Poland and Australia as neifghbors instead.
Say, do you think we might talk Poland or the Aussies into expanding?
Seriously, I do thank the British and everyone else who stood with USA after 911 through today.Especially the British.

The President pronounces it "nu-cue-lar" rather than the correct "nu-cle-ar." To which I say, so what.

I actually forced myself to listen to much of Howard Dean's "major" foreign policy address just so I could know my enemy. Dean had a copy of the speech in his hand and read from it. Even so, he kept tripping over his lines and had to restart himself frequently. He kind of just rushed into the start of the speech with none of the usual gracious "thanks for having me" kind of intro. Almost seemed like the speech started somewhere in the middle. And his voice had this odd sort of cadence, like he never really finished a sentence or something. It was mind-numbingly boring.

The MERRIAM DICTIONARY online also has BOTH pronunciations for the word NEVADA......when that was a big deal a month or so ago I posted the wav file for all those who went NUTS so they could hear it pronounced INCORRECTLY. Seems as though this POTUS will have a profound legacy once he leaves office, winning the war on TERRORISM and providing alternative pronunciations for words.

I love it when GW DRIVES those IVORY TOWER ACADEMES NUTS!!!

Cuba, Libya and Syria are added to Bush's 'axis of evil' (5/8/2002)
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | May 8, 2002 | By Gay Alcorn

Posted on 12/19/2003 2:53:17 PM PST by witnesstothefall

The Bush Administration has pledged to take tough action against three new members of its ''axis of evil".

The White House claims that the three - Cuba, Libya and Syria - are developing chemical, biological or nuclear weapons in breach of international treaties.

President George Bush caused an international uproar when he called Iraq, Iran and North Korea an ''axis of evil". Yesterday, in a speech, ''Beyond the Axis of Evil", to the conservative Heritage Foundation, the Undersec-retary of State, John Bolton, claimed that Cuba was developing weapons of mass destruction.

''America is determined to prevent the next wave of terror," Mr Bolton said. ''States that renounce terror and abandon [weapons of mass destruction] can become part of our effort. But those that do not can expect to become our targets."

The threat from the Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, an American nemesis since the 1959 communist revolution, had ''often been underplayed", Mr Bolton said.

He dismissed a 1998 government report that concluded that Cuba had only a ''limited capacity" to threaten Americans. It had been distorted by the influence of a spy for Havana, Ana Belen Montes, who pleaded guilty to espionage in March.

Mr Bolton said that Cuba had ''at least a limited offensive biological warfare research and development effort", and had provided technology to other ''rogue" states.

He refused to name them, but Cuban defectors and United States officials have suggested that Cuba and Iran could be co-operating in biological warfare technology.

He noted that last year Dr Castro visited Iraq, Syria and Libya, all of them on America's list of state sponsors of terrorism, which also includes North Korea, the Sudan and Iran.

Recently, there have been moves in Congress and business leaders to relax the stand-off with Cuba. Jimmy Carter is due to visit Cuba next week, the first sitting or former US president to do so since Dr Castro came to power.

The White House is staunchly opposed to any thawing of relations, partly because of the voting power of Cuban-Americans in vital states.

There had also been signs that relations between the US and Libya had improved slightly, and Mr Bolton noted that Libya had expressed interest in joining the Chemical Weapons Convention. But he was sceptical. Libya had produced at least 100 tonnes of chemical weapons and was pursuing nuclear and biological weapons, he said.

Syria had stockpiles of the nerve agents, sarin and VX, and was able to produce small amounts of biological warfare agents. Mr Bolton made little mention of China and Russia, the main suppliers of nuclear and other material to ''rogue" states.

GW is too dumb to handle Venezuela while he has us in the Iraqi/Afghanistan quagmire and the terrible economic condition America is in. (Sarcasm off)

If we knew, he wouldn't be the Stealth President!
