The reigning Miss Savannah has been arrested for shooting and critically wounding a former standout high school football player in what Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police say was an attack motivated by jealousy.
Tuesday evening, Sharron Nicole Redmond, 21, went from relative glamour to the stark surroundings of the Chatham County jail.
Redmond has been charged with aggravated assault of Kevin Shorter, 25. But that charge could be upgraded to murder if Shorter dies in Memorial Health University Medical Center.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Shorter was in critical condition, and police said he had lost a large amount of blood.
Shorter was shot between his lower abdomen and upper thigh after coming out of the Rice Mill Lane residence of Charlie Hall in the Runaway Point subdivision, according to police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson.
Wilson said Shorter was dating both Redmond and Hall's daughter, whose first name the sergeant declined to give. Shorter was leaving the Hall residence about 8 p.m.
"The shooting happened as he was getting into his car, apparently about to leave," Wilson said. "He ran back into the house and collapsed."
Wilson characterized the shooting as "a fatal error in judgment" and "unfortunate circumstances for such a polished and accomplished young lady."
A teacher at Beach High School, Redmond graduated summa cum laude from Atlanta's Spelman College, completing her double major in English and pre-medicine in three years, according to the Miss Savannah Web site.
She was in the process of getting her master's degree in education from Armstrong Atlantic State University.
She assumed the duties of Miss Savannah in August when Andrea Bailey who was originally crowned Miss Savannah won the title of Miss Georgia and went on to compete in the Miss America competition.
Redmond was also pursuing a singing career.
"We regret that this has happened. Our prayers go out to all of the families involved with this tragedy," said Miss Savannah Scholarship Organization Co-Executive Directors Tim Strickland and Patty Rietkovich in a prepared statement. "We don't have any comment on the case, other than this is obviously a legal matter that will be handled through the judicial system."
According to police, Redmond resides on Wilmington Island but grew up in the Cloverdale community.
Shorter also was known in the community, but mainly for his athleticism.
The current Andover Drive resident was an All-City fullback at Jenkins High School, according to his former coach, Walter Luter.
"When he needed to get his work done, he got his work done," Luter said.
Shorter attended junior college in California then transferred to the University of Hawaii, but had not yet completed requirements for a degree.
Joe Law, Shorter's uncle, said his nephew had returned to Savannah and had resumed taking some college courses. He also worked for a business Wilson identified as C Notes, a recording studio.
Redmond was released on $5,000 bond in a Wednesday Chatham County Recorders Court arraignment.

"She (Redmond) turned herself in this morning at about 11 a.m. with her attorney, family members and friends," said Mike Wilson, police department spokesman. "It was very emotional. Her attorney Mike Schiavone will definitely petition the court for another bail hearing. Her family has been very cooperative throughout the entire process."
The Shorter family did not want to comment Saturday.

During his high school days, Shorter played football with Dwayne Sedric Martin. Shorter was one of the first people to reach Martin's after Martin was shot and killed on the Jenkins campus in the spring of 1996.
Redmond will be held in the Chatham County Detention Center throughout the weekend. She is scheduled to appear Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Recorder's Court.
I ran a Google search and found a few articles about this. Apparently she was a Miss Canada 1977. That would make her about 47 years old. Then again, the same article mentioned a 60-yr. old prostitute working out of her home in a retirement village, Sun City!
