The impeachment did not backfire.

It did politically, in that we lost seats in Congress afterward. Republicans were certainly not rewarded for the impeachment.

If anything, it turned us against ourselves blaming certain other Republicans for not doing a good enough job. Never mind that the Democrats would have prevented Clinton's removal no matter what we did.

I agree that we scored a moral victory, but the only ones clapping were Republicans, and not even all of them.

Unfortunately, the rabid leftists and the rabid media are all too willing to believe anything evil or bad about this President. Many Americans get their news from the alphabet networks and they certainly are not going to defend Bush. It will be up to us Republicans to riot if they try this crap.

I think those losses of seats were due more to a weaker than expected showing by Bush at the top of the ticket. Sort of a "negative" coattail effect. The election was too far after the fact for impeachment to have been a major factor if a factor at all.
