...- now that his legacy as a courageous Saladinesque warrior facing up to America is in ruins...What does the author of this piece mean 'now'? The best Saddam could ever do against the Americans was to be knocked around like a dust mouse in a whirlwind. If Saladin was that incompetent, Muslims certainly don't have much historical competence to look up to.

"Never heard of Asia Times either.Flake paper??"
Not really a flake paper, but they do print more than their share of "B.S." The do have good articles though from time to time. This isn't one of them, but I did find it rather humorus.

One can bet he is sure that when he talks he may be able to hurl George W Bush all the way back to his ranch in Crawford - along with Saddam's close collaborator Dick Cheney and Saddam's old friend Donald Rumsfeld.
Oh Gee, Golly, Whiz, We Can Only Pray He Is Successful... (/couric)

Don't know if he is an American, I did find this "bio" about him on that website:
THE ROVING EYE ![](http://asiatimes.ru/atimes/images/pepe-page-mug.gif)
An extreme traveler, Pepe's nose for news takes him to all corners of the globe. He was in Afghanistan and interviewed the military leader of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, Ahmad Shah Masoud, a couple of weeks before his assassination (Masoud: From warrior to statesman , Sept 11, 2001). Two weeks before September 11, 2001, while Pepe was in the tribal areas of Pakistan, we published his prophetic piece, Get Osama! Now! Or else ... (Aug 30, 2001). Pepe was one of the first journalists to reach Kabul after the Taliban's retreat, and more recently he has explored and reported from "Axis of Evil" countries Iraq and Iran.

Something else that was discredited with Saddam's capture:
(Just) alive and kicking in BaghdadThe word in some intelligence quarters, and also on the streets in Baghdad, where Pepe Escobar does some footwork, is that Saddam "Elvis" Hussein is secreted in the capital, albeit a devastated city that he would not recognize from the days when he ruled with an iron fist. Who does this loser think he's kidding? Saddam never even sported a beard until being driven into his pathetic little spider holes. I think even he dumbest person in the middle east would laugh at this bunch of crap. I think U.S. haters will grasp any excuse to hate, real or imagined.

This crap may or may not be tossed around at DirtyUnderwear but I see this sort of nonsense posted as "fact" on apolitical discussion boards (for example about music or local events). The politically correct left has gone completely gonzo. Only a few "moderates" are starting to realize just how completely gonzo they are and just why we were calling some of the protestors AntiAmerican.
It took Bill Clinton admitting he lied about having sex with Monica to make these same ign'ant fools believe it ("Well, now that HE told me", excuse me, you are relying on the words of a known liar at that point). Bubba's apology was the best because he was sorry if they misunderstood what he was saying the first time, not sorry that he lied to them.
Don't know what it is going to take to make these newborn pups open their eyes to what the left (in American and globally) represents/defends these days.

As I recall, the American troops were under strict orders from the highest levels to make sure Saddam was captured alive. If the administration were worried about Saddam's revelations about Western duplicity or American underhandedness (or whatever), then this would not have been the case. Our planners, who are quite sharp, have thought this through and have a plan, and apparently this plan is best served by having Saddam alive for a trial. Saddam is pretty clever by third-world thug standards, but chances are slim that he'll outmaneuver the United States here. This writer has done us a favor by summarizing for us the wishful thoughts that we can expect to hear radiating from the paranoid Left and its equally paranoid Islamist allies.
