Iraqi newspaper publishes photos of Saddam behind bars

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A giant photo of fallen dictator Saddam Hussein getting a jail visit from his nemesis Ahmed Chalabi graced the front page of a Baghdad newspaper.

A pale and thinner Saddam, dressed in a grey sports jacket and white robes, is sitting on a bed in his crumbling cell, next to his adversary, the longtime Iraqi opposition leader Chalabi, who returned to Baghdad after Saddam was pushed from power last April.

The photo was blown up across the front page of Al-Mutamar, the paper of Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress (INC).

"Today's paper sold out in record time. I haven't even been able to get a copy myself," said INC spokesman Intifadh Qanbar.

The photo was taken Sunday when a delegation from Iraq's interim Governing Council, including Chalabi, were brought by the Americans to identify Saddam.

The US military and its civil administration have not said where they are holding Saddam.

He was captured at an isolated farmhouse late Saturday in Ad-Dawr, just outside the fallen dictator's hometown of Tikrit, 180 kilometres (110 miles) north of the capital.

Chalabi, whose family fled Iraq after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1958, has called for Saddam to be sentenced to death.

I find it it astounding that human compassion is expressed towards this barbaric animal.

I'm with you on this. I used to work with some pathetic person that I always ended up feeling sorry for and that person always turned around and used that kindness to stab me in the back. I'm sure Saddam will do the same when given the chance. He will make the USA seems like the criminal, the torturer, the guilty, the horrendous mass murderer that he himself really is. You just watch. And I for one will take satisfaction is the fact that I never felt any compassion, pity, or guilt for this man's situation.

Saddam: "So there I am, chilling in my new crib, munchin' on a few dates, thinking about the virgins, when suddenly I'm being dragged out by my ankles! It happened so fast I didn't even have a chance to draw my pistol!"

Chalabi: "Uh, take your hands out of your pants when we talk... it freaks me out."

His is sitting on a bed. The white object looks like a sheet. It must be cold there. It looks like an improvised holding place. (I wonder if it is saddam's own jail.)

If he is wearing a long white robe, the effect is consistent.

Funny you should say that.

That is a real coincidence. Saddam is really having trouble with his. They are still trying to get Toby Keith's boot out of it.
It's the American way.

I am not saying he does not deserve all punishment available. Including rape, torture, ultimately death. But there is something about compassion that is in you, whether you like it or not. You can override it with logic, which I have. But it doesn't stop it from being there. That is why I said the "woman" in me, because I think women and men are different in that respect. Usually anyway.
