Bizzare arrest puts Newark in the spotlight
By HOWIE MANSFIELD, Times Staff Writer
NEWARK The village is gaining some unwanted publicity even a mention on Rush Limbaughs radio show as news spreads about an unusual arrest late last week.
Village police charged Darlene H. Humby, 27, of 608 North Main St., with second-degree assault Friday morning after lighting her boyfriends shirt on fire during sex the night before.
Her boyfriend was taken to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital for second- and third-degree burns to his torso and arms. He was later flown to the burn unit at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he is listed in stable condition.
Capt. Thomas Smith said that Humby has a history of burning sexual partners. On Dec. 3, she allegedly burned the crotch area of blue jeans worn by another man. Humby was arrested on fourth-degree criminal mischief charges and released.
In the latest incident, Humby told police that she told her boyfriend to stop, drop and roll to put the fire out. Smith said the investigation into the incident is continuing. The shirt was taken to the Monroe County Crime Lab to determine if an accelerant was used.
Humby also was arrested in March for raping a 16-year-old boy. Smith said Humby provided alcohol to the victim and had sex with him March 24. She was charged with third-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child. Humby agreed to a plea deal and spent 89 days in Wayne County Jail.
This woman is very unique, said Smith, noting that very few women are arrested for rape, let alone this bizarre behavior.
Ive seen nothing like this before, Smith said.
Reports of the latest incident have been on area TV news broadcasts and in the papers; this morning, it was one of the topicson the Brother Weez radio show on WCMF-FM 96.5 in Rochester, with Brother Weez speaking to a number of Humbys neighbors and friends about her background.
Ron Holdraker, editor and publisher of the Times of Wayne County, said he placed the Humby story in his Head Scratchers column, and that readers called him to say Humby and the incident were mentioned by syndicated talk show host Rush Limbaugh yesterday afternoon.
Smith said Humbys arrest is just another criminal case.
Darlene Humby committed a crime and will be prosecuted, said Smith. The Newark police (department) doesnt want or relish this publicity. Humby was arrested after undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. She was taken to Wayne County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond and was to appear in village court this morning.

The Torch is gone, however. One less they'll have to bribe....
Newark, NY??? What's the world coming to?
What's the difference between Nurk and an undercover police officer...?
I've never been set on fire, though, so he's got one up on me.
