Everything is preventable except death and taxes.

A long chain of IFs in place and you can prevent anything.

If Osama was stillborn, If Jimmy Carter has stood up to Iran and not emboldened Muslims, If Saudi Arabia wasn't a nest of Wahhabism, If we never let Muslims into this country, if if if.

Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc

There's a better latin term for it, but I can't recall it. Basically it means "If I had done X instead of Y, Z wouldn't have happened"

Well, for whatever its worth, this will force the Bush administration to discuss/leak just exactly what Clinton and the democraps did to our intelligence services and military.

Hey, if they built the buildings 50 feet to the right of where they built them, the planes would have missed.

How easy is that?

Those documents may shed light on one of the most controversial assertions of the Bush administration – that there was never any thought given to the idea that terrorists might fly an airplane into a building.

"I don't think anybody could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile," said national security adviser Condoleeza Rice on May 16, 2002.

If the weight of the '9/11 could have been avoided' argument rests on this, pardon me while I laugh my ass off.

Assessing that a enemy may have a certain capability is part of the intelligence process, but it's not even remotely actionable. Our enemies COULD do anything from shooting down 747s with SA-14s to dumping poison in the water supply. Some of them COULD fire ballistic missiles at us. Someone COULD shoot at the President with a sniper rifle while he's in his motorcade.

That's not the issue.

Threats can be prevented with ADVANCE WARNING, but lacking that, you can either take protective measures or preemptive action.

Preventative measures sound nice, but think about it. This is POST 9/11 yet we still can't get armed pilots or passenger profiling. The best we've been able to come up with is the Patriot Act and the TSA 'granny checking squads'. How would anyone have gone for it PRE 9/11?

Preemptive action? Good luck selling that one. Apparently, the 'enlightened' position is that we should wait for our enemies to strike us, and then hold a commission to analyze how they snuck it past the goalie.

Hence this report.

Since this report suggests no ADVANCE WARNING nor even a CREDIBLE THREAT (remember that one), this is just an exercise in historical speculation. If it was so damned obvious that 9/11 was coming, why did it take this long to get all the information together and produce this assessment? This should have been readily apparent years ago.

"How is it possible we have a national security advisor coming out and saying we had no idea they could use planes as weapons when we had FBI records from 1991 stating that this is a possibility," said Kristen Breitweiser, one of four New Jersey widows who lobbied Congress and the president to appoint the commission.

How? Because she is incompetant, and should have resigned, along with Tenet, for their intelligence failures prior to 9/11. The Ramsi Youssef laptop material found in the Philippines specifically mentioned planes and the WTC in 1996. Although 9/11 would never have been possible without the Clintons, Rice clearly dropped the ball, and her constant propping up of the terrorist Al Queda cell which calls itself the Palestinian Authority is also shameful. Bush should not invite her along for the next term, despite Rove's political interest in her skin color.

Ya know we never enjoy anything nowadays.

There always has to be something to screw up the good news.

Can't we have a week where we beat on the terrorists, have a good economy, and Christmas ?

Geeze.

This is so stupid. Of course it could have been prevented. Of course it should have been prevented. In fact, I could have prevented it if I had only driven east and then located and shot all the highjackers. But I didn't so I guess I am to blame for the whole deal.

The only thing I can figure is that Mrs. clinton (or bill, or Sandy, or Maddie, or...) didn't give the FBI files to the Bush administration, when they left power.

Heck, the most ethical administration of all time did nothing, zero, nada, bupkus, for eight years. A$$holes, all of them.

Nothing to see here, move on (sound like a web site/left wing/America hating group. Kinda like People for the Amerikan Way).

The widows want to know why various government agencies didn't connect the dots before Sept. 11, such as warnings from FBI offices in Minnesota and Arizona about suspicious student pilots.

Because government agencies don't work that way. If these people want real answers, talk to the Feds who were shut out of the '93 WTC bombing investigation by criminal prosecutors. Or read some Laurie Mylroie, since she's one of the few people who saw the problem and exactly where it was leading, long before 9/11.

9/11 happened because acts of war were treated like random acts of criminal violence for eight years under a corrupt, self-serving administration that didn't have the time, the inclination or the stomach to do what was necessary. That's the simple truth of the matter.

But let's attack the adminstration that's done more to eradicate Islamic terrorism than anyone ever dreamt possible.

These idiots are infuriating...

"As you read the report, you're going to have a pretty clear idea what wasn't done and what should have been done," he said. "This was not something that had to happen."

Here's something that should not have been done by Kean: self-consciously making these sort of teasing, sensationalizing, grandstanding comments on responsibility for a national tragedy for news consumption before the full report is ready to be released and its conclusions and supporting evidence reviewed.

I don't know who are the people who "would certainly not be in the position they were in at that time because they failed" in preventing 9/11, but I do know now that Kean has failed in his obligation to maintain proper decorum in his position as chair of his investigative committee. And that he should not "be in the position" he is in.

Do you all realize that we could have prevented 9/11 by not allowing travel by air over the USA? On this historic day, the 100th anniversary of the Wright Bros' marvelous experiment, maybe it would be better if we only allowed travel by train. It is much harder to derail a train and drive it into a building.

If I had a party and made every guest drink out of a sippy cup, I would prevent all spillage.

For the first time, the chairman of the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks is saying publicly that 9/11 could have and should have been prevented, reports CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston.

"This is a very, very important part of history and we've got to tell it right," said Thomas Kean.

"As you read the report, you're going to have a pretty clear idea what wasn't done and what should have been done," he said. "This was not something that had to happen."

 9/11 Chair: Attack Was Preventable

ADDENDUM 12.13.03:

As for pathologic self-interest, check out Richard Miniter's C-SPAN interview; the interview is contained in my latest virtual hillary movie (below), hillary talks:ON TERROR; it is absolutely devastating for the clintons. Miniter lays out in sickening detail the clintons' monumental failure to protect America.

Note in particular Madeleine Albright's shocking reason given at the time of the USS Cole attack why the clinton administration should not respond militarily. It tell us everything we need to know about the clintons. It tell us why clinton redux is an absolutely suicidal notion.

Notwithstanding their cowardice, corruption, perfidy and essential stupidity, the clintons, according to Albright, made their decision not to go after the terrorists primarily to enhance their own legacy and power. The clintons calculated that such inaction would MAXIMIZE THEIR CHANCES TO RECEIVE THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. No matter that that inaction would also maximize the terrorists' power, maximize America's danger.
