Saudi Arabia bans cuddly toys

Saudi Arabia has banned the importation of female dolls and teddy bears, giving merchants three months to dispose of such stock, a state-guided newspaper reported Wednesday.
Interior Minister Prince Nayef ordered the ban which was relayed around the country by the national Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Al-Riyadh said.
The daily gave no reason for the ban, which could not be confirmed with government officials Wednesday.
The ban singled out stuffed-animal toys and dolls of brides. It made no mention of male dolls and it was not clear if these were banned as well.
The order also prohibited the importation of crucifixes and models of Buddha, the newspaper said.
The ban comes at a time when Saudi Arabia appears to be taking steps toward moderation and limited reform. The kingdom came under heavy criticism after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States as 15 of the 19 hijackers involved were Saudis. Critics charged that the country's conservative interpretation of Islam had helped produce militants.
The government subsequently gave directives to mosque preachers, amended religious textbooks and promised local elections - a first for a country that has no parliament.

Poor little arab kids. Now they'll only have the much harder Teddy Clothespin to play with. The way around this ban is to sell boxed sets. Give the bear a sword, and call the doll an adulteress. Girls will be free to play with the dolls for a while. And then the dolls can be given to their bear-toting brothers, who can decapitate them for adultery.

Let me guess...the religion of peace kingdom will stone the children to death caught playing with dolls?

all toys in Saudia Arabia will have sharp edges or pointy things sticking out Gonna be a lot of kids getting their eyes poked out. It's a shame too, because the Saudis usually reserve that honor for the adults.

http://www.washtimes.com/upi-breaking/20030910-080646-8836r.htm Saudis bar 'Jewish' Barbie doll
SYDNEY, Australia, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia's religious police have declared Barbie dolls a threat to Islamic morality, citing the revealing clothes of what they call the "Jewish" toy.
The Sydney Morning Herald said Saudi Arabia's Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vicelists the dolls on a section of its website devoted to items deemed offensive to the conservative Saudi Wahabbi version of Islam.
A notice on the Web site says: "Jewish Barbie dolls, with their revealing clothes and shameful postures, accessories and tools are a symbol of decadence to the perverted West. Let us beware of her dangers and be careful."
