Doug Bereuter (R-NE) has announced he will not seek a 14th term as Nebraska's 1st district representative. Throughout his long career, Bereuter has been instrumental in bringing the 1st district and all of Nebraska the kind of funding that only someone with his seniority could manage. Bereuter also serves on the financial services, intelligence, international relations and transportation committees and is an expert in foreign relations.
The move came as a surprise to some including, Lee Terry (R-NE) of the 2nd district. "I am floored," Terry said of the retirement announcement. "I am stunned." It was widely believed that Bereuter would become the chairman of the house intelligence committee in 2005.
It had been speculated that Bereuter was in the running to become the next president of the University of Nebraska, and while that has yet to be decided, there's no doubt that the 1st district will see its first real race in 26 years.
Bereuter has never received less than 60% of the vote in any of his 13 elections.
Coming soon: Handicapping the 2004 1st District race and some speculation about the 3rd district seat currently held by Tom Osborne.
Also, does anyone know where I can track open House races? I used to be able to on Roll Call until they went subscription only.
That's what our Republic has degenerated to: stealing the most loot from taxpayers makes you terrific. Bush's vote-buying "free" pill scam is simply the latest example.
We need a new American Revolution.
