Left-wingers tend to like cartoonist Aaron McGruder for his comic-strip assaults on the Bush administration in "The Boondocks."
But at a dinner Sunday night marking the 138th anniversary of the Nation magazine, McGruder earned boos for saying liberals need to be meaner if they want to win back the White House.

Do the stockholders of America's newspapers know they're paying this worm's salary? And giving his racist spew a PAYING platform?
To: All
"I've met Condoleezza Rice and called her a murderer to her face," McGruder said. From his studio, the cartoonist opined, "This is what I do. I am always going to speak honestly. I'm always winging it, and that's one of the things that gets me into trouble." Yo, he be keepin it reeahhl. Wut up wif dat? Ain't nuttin butta thang. yunowutimesayin?

The stockholders of American newspapers aren't paying McGruder's salary; the purchasers thereof are.
Boondocks is published in the Chicago Tribune. It's been quite controversial, and they've withheld a couple of strips. But I like it. He certainly talks a lot about Bush and his administration, and obviously opposes it. But he also heavily criticizes the glorification of violence, "thug life", the degrination of women, etc., in popular culture generally and in black popular culture specifically. If a Democrat is elected in 2004, I don't think he's going to back off the latter theme.

The people who buy newspapers - circulation revenue - is often not even half of a paper's "top line". Most cash comes from advertisers. And it is newspaper management who decides which strips to run...and management, technically, is answerable to shareholders.

McGruder is just a mean sumbitch, that's all. He's actually relatively clueless about politics. No one ever won an election by being mean all the time. If he wants to go on and call Condi Rice a murderer, I say let him do it. All that means is more votes for Bush.
Liberals are so wrapped up in their anger and hatred that they cannot see the forest for the trees.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

I've read his comic strip. It is ok, but there are many other comic strips that are far better ('Classic Peanuts' for example).
As for mcgruder, he has some talent for drawing angry black people but his acumen toward politics (calling Rice a murderer to her face) or "thug life" is simply dim, nothing more. Luann has more substance. The only salient point he seems to get across is that he is just desperate for attention.

I have not a single time found anything of redeeming quality in the Boondocks. It is always deceitful, always counter to conservative ideas, never funny, very rarely slightly amusing, always vacuous.

This political cartoon is in our local paper. I read it from time to time, just trying to keep an open mind. It always seemed to me that the content was just a notch below rage, obviously with a strong racial tone. I honestly don't see what useful purpose it serves. Let me put on my brain numbing liberal hat: Ok, it gives a "voice" to African Americans. It gives alternate views. It highlights the struggles that still exist for modern African Americans. Hat off.
IMO as long as stuff like this is embraced by the mainstream media we will have more, not less of the kinds of problems that the cartoon addresses.

Dear Mr. McGruder:
Condi Rice is the single most powerful and intellectual black woman in the history of the United States government. Period, end of sentence, end of paragraph, full stop.
You, by way of simple comparison, scribble for a living.
Please don't hare Ms. Rice, simply because she's a more successful black woman than you'll ever dream of beng. You sad, miserable, hate-filled little sheet stain. Thank you.
Now... carry on with your little cartoons, then. :)

I agree that Mcgruder is a loser that does not know what the ???? he is talking about but I'm confused as to why you would write a message as you did? It appears offensive in some ways; if you are implying something racial?
