[history]
<Howard Dean initially reacted with dignity and grace to the news that Saddam Hussein had been taken into custody. He alone among the Democratic presidential contenders gave President Bush some credit for the capture.
But if Dean doesn't yet wish that the 4th Infantry Division soldiers who captured Saddam had tossed a grenade down the spider hole first, he soon will. <Michael Jackson, Scott Peterson and Kobe Bryant, step aside. Saddam's trial will be the trial of the year, perhaps of the century, with a worldwide audience of hundreds of millions. It will change the nature of news coverage from Iraq, to the grave detriment of Dean and other antiwar Democrats. <The news media and the Democratic presidential contenders have been doing their best to ignore the evidence of Saddam's crimes.
It now will be very difficult to do so. <The news coverage from Iraq has consisted almost exclusively of highlighting the casualties of the day from this ambush or that suicide bombing. But Saddam's trial will supersede that. It will be easy for television to cover, impossible for television to ignore. <And the capture of Saddam means that there will be eventually - and may be immediately - far fewer ambushes and suicide bombings for the media to report. <Intelligence is additive.
Already there have been a number of arrests based on information obtained from Saddam in his initial interrogation, and from documents captured with him. <If I were a former regime loyalist, I'd be worried sick about what Saddam knew about me and my whereabouts, and what he may have committed to paper. I'd be so busy trying to cover my tracks that I wouldn't have time to plan any new attacks. <And if I were an FRL, and I had seen the meek and cowardly way in which Saddam surrendered, my eagerness to risk my life in what is now obviously a lost cause would substantially be diminished. <The most immediate effect of Saddam's capture will be a huge increase in the number of Iraqis willing to come forward with information, now that they know for sure Saddam will not be coming back to wreak vengeance upon them. <Saddam's capture also means that the tongues of his senior officials already in custody will be loosened.

Mr. Kelly points out something I haven't seen anyone else mention. That is, Saddam's war crimes trial will mean daily positive exposure for Bush, and daily negative exposure for the Democrats, right up to the fall election. This next year will be the Perfect Storm for the Democrat party.

I never thought of that ebfore but the potential boost to Bush is amazing. The RATS will go crazy over the daily Saddam Hussein trial coverage. Too bad for them. LOL!

"If Bush will not bring our boys home, then they will have to die so that Howard Dean can win," said "Johnny Smith." "I think it is shameful that the ACLU has not commented on the obvious mistreatment Hussein has suffered at the hands of the American military," said "Leslie in SF."The vile sickness and rot that is the Rat party.

The crats are probably praying to whatever passes for God or gods over there that Saddam gets offed by some vengeful guard before any trial starts.

They ran the White House and Congress for many years. They just blew their chance. Ha!

I wonder if the mainstream media will report Saddam's trial with a daily tagline such as: "Saddam on trial--X days after the leaders of the Democrat Party declared President Bush's War on Iraq a miserable failure of a quagmire."
To: vanmorrison
It will be interesting to see that Saddam's arguments will be the same as the Dems' and the Frogs' talking points.

I think that's one reason why the Dems want Saddam to be tried by an "international" court - they could work with the French/Germans/Russians to make sure it was delayed until after the election.

Thank you.

Hadn't thought about it, but your theory sounds about right.
19 of 26 NATO (current and invited) members are members of the 60-strong Iraq Coaltion.
Even if you remove the "invited" NATO countries who will ascend in 2004, you still 12 of 19 NATO countries also serving as formal members of the Iraq Coalition.
Funny I don't recall this fact being mentioned in any of the reporting about the "internationalization" speeches by Dean, Kerry, or Hitlery over the last several days.

To: vanmorrison
Don't put it past the Dems to roll-out past info on the financial & weapons support given to Saddam by Reagan / Bush Sr. during the Iraq/Iran war.
The Dems will be all over the media with talking points that it was the Republicans who made Saddam into the despot he became.
Just watch!

"...and don't forget when saddam tells all about the the private conversations he had with Chirac and others.." I, for one, would be very interested in Saddam's personal assessment of Dan Rather, David Bonior and Jim McDermott. The Brits, I assume, would be equally curious about Saddam's views of George Galloway...

"I think that's one reason why the Dems want Saddam to be tried by an "international" court - they could work with the French/Germans/Russians to make sure it was delayed until after the election."
I think another reason they are touting the "international court" approach is that they want to use the trial to exaggerate any previous American ties to Saddam and de-emphasize the much more recent ties between Saddam, France, Russia, Germany, and China. They want to manage the information to extract maximum damage to the USA/Bush and minimum damage to Saddam's European and Asian facilitators. By the time they're done, they'll have the public believing that Rumsfeld was the one who brought Saddam to power.
