LANSING -- Four Ithaca teens were sentenced to spend four weekends in jail for their participation in an anti-war demonstration in December 2002 at a military recruiter's office.

Marie Grady De Mott, 17, Oona Grady DeFlaun, 18, Ana Grady Flores, 17, and Anna Ritter, 17, were sentenced Tuesday by Lansing Town Court Justice William Burin. In September, the teenagers were convicted of third-degree criminal trespass, a class B misdemeanor. The charges were brought against them for trespassing on Dec. 21, 2002, at the military recruiter's office at the Cayuga Mall in Lansing.

Wait until they get to jail, find out the mail for the evening is baloney sandwiches and have a nervous breakdown over there being no vegan alternative.

I predict a two day hunger strike every weekend, with them wondering why no one is concerned about their well-being and impending martyrdom.

Let's try that again. What I MEANT to say was:

Wait until they get to jail, find out the MEAL for the evening is baloney sandwiches and have a nervous breakdown over there being no vegan alternative.

I predict a two day hunger strike every weekend, with them wondering why no one is concerned about their well-being and impending martyrdom.

Whoever, when the United States is at war

Irrelevant. Kongress has not declared war, hence we are not at war.

Hit the post before I was done. I think the judge should have sentenced them to 10 days continuously in the local lockup and not let them out on weekdays. That sounds about right for trespass

As noted with another poster the more I think about it, the more I like the weekends only sentence.

These idiots will probably try to hold a hunger strike and, let's face it, two days without eating every week is hardly going to engender much sympathy or publicity, whereas a continuous strike might.

Sounds like mom and dad were out of town.

The name "ritter" crops up regularly in these reports on marxist/socialist activity in Ithaca. The whole family is either bugf..k nuts or militant marxist. Come to think of it to be a militant marxists you have to be a head case anyway unless your goal is to increase misery for the rest of humanity, and if this is your goal then you're not just nuts, but evil as well.

Paging Amnesty International! This girl has been imprisoned because of what she believes.

De Mott said. "I don't believe I committed a crime by going to the recruitment center."

Maybe "Ritter" and "Grady" are Socialist heroes who we are unfamiliar with, and they are just adopting the surnames as middle names as some sort hero-worship tactic?

Okay, bringing this up again because I haven't checked in for a while.

I know three of these girls, as we used to be neighbors. They are all from the same large family, hence the Grady middle name--their mothers are sisters. They were raised to be psuedo-Catholic, leftist activists.

I am not at all surprised to see them do this. They are certainly misguided, but not evil twits as opined here. I wish they were on solid ground politically, as I admire their conviction if not their stance.

Update: The City of Evil continues to live up to its name...

Judge grants stay for teen antiwar protesters

Four Ithaca teenagers have been granted a temporary reprieve from the jail time they were scheduled to begin serving last Friday.

Marie Grady De Mott, 18, Oona Grady DeFlaun, 18, Ana Grady Flores, 17, and Anna Ritter, 17, were sentenced last month to serve four weekends in jail for their role in a Dec. 21, 2002 "die-in" at the military recruiter's office in the Cayuga Mall. They had been convicted by Lansing Town Court Justice William Burin on charges of third-degree criminal trespass, a class B misdemeanor.

The four juvenile defendants filed the initial papers for an appeal Jan. 5. At a hearing on Monday, Tompkins County Judge John Sherman granted a 60 day stay on the sentence. He also agreed to give them free access to a public defender in the intervening time period up to March 12 because of their economic status.

So, not only did Judge Sherman (a liberal Democrat) stay their sentences pending appeal, but he ordered the taxpayers to foot the bill for these little punks' legal expenses (What? They don't have parents?).

Ithaca is the City of Evil.

This scene would fit well as a sub-plot of Atlas Shrugged, where the commies incrementally dismantle society.

If they had convictions about their stance, they would stand their ground knowing that they would be arrested and spend their time in jail.

The peanut gallery in the court whining about sending them to jail is a group without a firm grasp. Want to be a scofflaw? Don't be surprised when you wind up in court.

Ask for a jury trial if you don't believe that a law is fair. See if you can sway the jury to agree. Don't gripe when the ruling doesn't come down your way.
