Economic and business issues from the real world where people live are being addressed by Kirk Humphreys in his quest to succeed Don Nickles as Oklahoma's U.S. Senator. Humphreys' focus is "very positive" and keyed to stability providing the average person and/or family confidence to make a decision on big-dollar purchases. His candidacy is drawing support from "name" sources, but Humphreys is more concerned about increasing his grass roots support with tours around the state. Ardmore was on his agenda Monday.
"It's going very well, we're off to a good start," Humphreys said. He sees his candidacy as "an opportunity ... a stewardship serving people."
His primary goal in the early stages is to meet and get acquainted with people around the state, visit and continue to build his campaign organization. Pledging that if elected he "will continue to live in Oklahoma City" and represent the entire state.
Humphreys and his wife, Danna, are the parents of three children, Grant, 28, an Oklahoma City resident who is married and has three children; Blair, a junior at the University of Oklahoma, and Annie, a high school junior at Edmond North.
Touching on issues, Humphreys was elated about the news of Saddam Hussein's capture during the weekend, calling it "a great day for Americans." He also regard's the capture as a tremendous boost for the President's war effort. When asked about where Hussein should be tried, Humphreys referred to the Denver trials of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols.
"To move the trials (out of Iraq) would send the wrong message," he said.
The recently enacted Medicare package, he says, "offers some good things," by serving an urgent need of many people and affording the person making the decision to spend their (health care) money more wisely."
Humphreys has recently been endorsed by former Congressman J.C. Watts and his successor Tom Cole. He was earlier endorsed by U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, Tulsa Congressman John Sullivan and Tulsa Mayor Bill LaFortune.
"I have known Kirk Humphreys for many, many years," Watts said in his endorsement. "He is a dear friend. I can truly say he is a great family man, a man of faith, a man of compassionate conservative principles and a man who knows how to get things done in the difficult political atmosphere of our nation's capitol. I can't think of anyone more capable of replacing Senator Don Nickles than Kirk Humphreys.
The former Congressman added Humphreys "will be good news for those wanting someone in office who will support our President. Whether it is in winning the war on terrorism, keeping our country safe by strengthening our military, developing under served communities, or improving our economy by making the President's tax relief permanent, Kirk Humphreys is the strong leader Oklahoma, and our nation, needs. He is smart, he is persuasive, he is our guy."
Cole called Humphreys "a bright new star in Oklahoma politics."
Expressing appreciation for the support, Humphreys said his campaign remains centered "on hard work and tireless effort. We will continue to aggressively build momentum towards the 2004 campaign season."
