The living industry of death

The annual death count has been released and it stands at 227,385. That's the number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood during its 2002-2003 fiscal year, according to its newly released annual report. If Planned Parenthood's death toll is measured in addition to abortions performed in hospitals other than Planned Parenthood, it is by far the leading cause of death in the United States today.

The victims of abortion are much younger than those who die of heart disease, cancer or stroke. Purveyors of the leading cause of death claim they are simply upholding the "right" of a woman to choose. In that spirit, Planned Parenthood is sending out its notorious 2003 Holiday Card heralding the slogan, "Choice on Earth."

But Planned Parenthood never completes the sentences or fills in the blanks when it comes to "choice on earth" or "a woman's right to choose." Just what is the choice that women must choose, according to Planned Parenthood? The "choice" here is one of death, and there is no alternative.

Though Planned Parenthood claims to provide a wide range of family-planning services, it doesn't perform many adoption referrals. Last year, only 1,963 mothers were referred to adoption services, an average of only two adoption referrals per year per Planned Parenthood clinic, according to a press release by STOPP International, a pro-life advocacy group.

Planned Parenthood doesn't care about choice. For over 99 percent of those counseled between abortion and adoption by Planned Parenthood, the only "choice" is abortion.

Planned Parenthood does care about being one of America's most profitable non-profit organizations. Though most industries are down financially with the economic slump of the past couple years, the death industry is more profitable than ever. According to its annual report, Planned Parenthood's total income for 2002-2003 was $766.6 million.

Planned Parenthood's sources of revenue are worth noting. From clinic operations, Planned Parenthood brought in $288.2 million, and pro-abortion donors contributed over $228 million. Taxpayers at the state and federal levels are responsible for $254.4 million of Planned Parenthood revenue.

Thanks to taxpayers via Medicaid and other social programs, Planned Parenthood was able to make a profit of nearly $37 million in 2002-2003. With that profit, America's leading abortion agency will work hard to promote its political and educational agenda by lobbying against parental consent for abortions, for expanded sex education and condom distribution in schools, for additional government family-planning programs and additional taxpayer funding so Planned Parenthood can reap even greater profits next year.

Planned Parenthood is the largest piece of the gargantuan government family-planning bureaucracy in America. Nearly a half-billion dollars in government family planning spending went to medical and family-planning agencies other than Planned Parenthood in the past year.

Government funding for Planned Parenthood first began in 1967 as a part of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society. Over the past 14 years, according to Internal Revenue Service records, the combined taxpayer financing of Planned Parenthood from federal, state and local sources has reached nearly $2.5 billion.

Government bureaucrats say that taxpayer funding for abortion is a good investment, despite the downturn in the economy and the recent budget deficits in nearly every state. In my home state of Washington, continued government spending on family planning, is, according to the state's Department of Social and Health Services, "aimed at the unintended pregnancies that dramatically add to welfare rolls and medical assistance costs." In other words, financing the elimination of human beings is good policy because it saves money in the long run.

But Planned Parenthood cannot save America. It will likely kill America if it keeps up its current record.

I am convinced that the single greatest problem in the abortion debate is not partial-birth abortion, not RU-486, not stem-cell research, not Planned Parenthood in-school programs, not state laws regulating minors who obtain abortions. The single greatest problem in the abortion debate is the major source of its massive, sadistic treasury: taxpayers.

The choice to abort human life is a choice to destroy human beings, to undermine families, to tinker with souls, and to violate consciences. Until taxpayers demand an end to government funding of abortion, the industry will continue to thrive. We must begin to abort abortion by cutting off its money. If we don't, America will be aborted.
