I'd suppose it to be hits/day -- just like those little counters you can put on a site to count visitorsE Rocc is correct. "Ranking" means #1 is the most popular site on the Internet, #5,000 is the 5,000th most popular site on the Internet, etc. The lower the number, the higher the hits/day.
FR's traffic is many times that of DU.

Suppose the two site were just absoulutly static: exactly the same hits per day.
One would expect to see a flat line describing the history, yes?
Well, that is NOT what we'd see, but a squiggly thing that flopped up and down due to the REST of the 'nets variability: the ratio of IT compared to the two static ones.
Bad way to show stuff IMHO.
